It's The Market Report's Spring Break!

It's time for The Market Report's Spring Break, so we won't have any posts until we begin our next group on May 1. Be sure to come back then to move on to our next state! In the meantime, don't forget to check out yesterday's Streetside Sights & Scenes here , and we'll have memorabilia on Grocery Archaeology 4/17-4/23! We also have a few updates and special reports, so make sure to check them all out here! Special Report: Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace - Morris Plains, NJ

Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace Owner: Philip DelPrete Opened:  February 2022 Previous Tenants:  Village ShopRite (1964-1982 & 1983-2013) Cooperative:  Associated Supermarket Group Location:  1711 NJ-10, Morris Plains, NJ Photographed:  March 2022 For the biggest and most exciting post of the day, we arrive at the brand-new Uncle Giuseppe's Marketplace of Morris Plains! Much like their first NJ location, up in Ramsey , along with their others in New York, the Morris Plains store is truly an amusement park of Italian food, but it's also a great supermarket. By the way, you'll notice that last time, I posted Uncle G on The Independent Edition, where I typically feature independent stores and chains under 6-8 locations. By now, Uncle G is a fast-growing 10-location chain with at least one more on the way -- which they haven't actually announced yet, but it's coming nonetheless to the former ACME/A&P in Tinton Falls . (See here .) Uncle G has moved the main ent

Update: SuperFresh - Roselle, NJ

SuperFresh Owner: Howard Lee / Food World Supermarkets Opened:  2017 Previous Tenants:  Food Fair > Pantry Pride > Foodtown > Food King > A Seabra Foods Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  550 Raritan Rd, Roselle, NJ Photographed:  March 2022 Some signs of life are starting to appear at the Roselle SuperFresh, which remains closed after storm damage in September 2019. While the store isn't exactly ready to reopen, there is some slight progress. No change really on the outside, although again there is an indication that the store will in fact be reopening: you'll see a number of yellow signs around the building directing people to a mailbox in the back which was not there last time. One thing we also skipped last time: a look inside the deli-bakery room. As we'll see, a lot of the fixtures have been removed. There's also signs of construction, such as the ceiling having been removed. While it may mean that there's more extensive renovation being do

Update: Foodtown - Caldwell, NJ

Super Foodtown of Caldwell Owner: Jack Shakoor / Jack's Supermarkets Opened: 1984 as Jack's Super IGA, ca. 2005 as Jack's Foodtown Previous Tenants:  multiple small supermarkets > Hy's Foodtown (1960s-1984) Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  370 Bloomfield Ave, Caldwell, NJ Photographed:  March 2022 After an extensive interior remodel, which was most recently documented here , the exterior of the Caldwell Foodtown has completed its remodel, too. The removal of the storefront exposed quite a few of the older storefronts underneath, which have been preserved but sadly covered up with the existing new facade. And while it's a major improvement over the prior facade, I just wish the sign had individual letters instead of them all on a box. It just looks cheap this way. But overall the storefront does look excellent, and fits in nicely with the small-town downtown of Caldwell. By the way, this store became Jack's Super IGA in 1984, then Foodtown

Streetside Sights & Scenes: New Jersey!

It's time again for one of my favorite features here on the blog, Streetside Sights & Scenes! Of course, this is the place for a look at my non-supermarket photos of the area, so I'm going to take you on a tour of New Jersey a little bit. There's a lot of really interesting stuff in this state so I present the disclaimer that this is in no way a travel guide or a "best of" list, it's just some of my photos from the area. Many or most of them are pictures I collected while out visiting supermarkets, so the geographic areas line up pretty nicely with what we saw for the past year and a half of blog posts. By the way, if you're not so interested in this and want to get back to the supermarkets, may I recommend visiting the schedule on yesterday's post  and returning for supermarkets on 5/1. Get ready for a whole lot of trains, hiking, and diners. Enjoy! Bergen/Passaic Counties Oakland: Diners & Sunsets The Market Report's Diner Report:  When
