Back in Time, Day 3

Continuing the celebration of The Market Report's 10th year! Each month of 2026, I'll be posting a different special feature to celebrate my 10th year of writing this blog. Last month, we took a look at my  favorite posts of 2016-2020 , and in January, we investigated the  history of A&P and its other brands . This month, let's spend some more time on the past with a look at some memorabilia today along with  this week's historical photos  and first memorabilia post . Today, in our final memorabilia post, we'll be looking at matchbooks ( which we've seen before ). These were all purchased at an antique store in downtown Gloucester, MA. The apostrophe has since been dropped from Gristedes. Elm Farm has an extensive ad for Bonded Meats inside this matchbook. Given that the antique store was in Gloucester, I wouldn't be surprised if these came from right in town. The Shaw's in Gloucester was previously a Star Market... ...and I don't know if ...

325 NY-100, Somers, NY

Original Grocery Tenant: Gristedes Address: 325 NY-100, Somers, NY Opened:  1974 Closed:  unknown Later Tenants:  CVS Photographed:  July 9, 2021 Sometimes my gut feeling leads me astray in deciding what used to be a supermarket, but this 15,000 square foot CVS just felt like a former supermarket to me. A little research shows I was right: the space was built with the rest of the strip mall in 1974 as a Gristedes. The infamously expensive New York City chain has branched out from the city on a few occasions, with their largest expansion being up to Westchester County. We've seen their former stores in Pelham and Scarsdale , too. I don't know when Gristedes closed, but it was well before the 2019 opening of a new upscale supermarket just across the street. Check it out here !

Snapshot: Gristedes - Murray Hill, Manhattan, NY

Just blocks from the United Nations headquarters is this Gristedes. Owned by the Red Apple Group, Gristedes has recently become a member of Allegiance Retail Services. It's located at 748 2nd Avenue. Photographed February 2018

Snapshot: Another Gristedes

Here's another Gristedes, also in Manhattan, like the one we saw on Wednesday. Unlike the one we saw on Wednesday, I do remember where this one was. It's on University Place just northeast of Washington Square Park. I couldn't believe this price on Simply Orange juice, a product I buy regularly. I've never seen it for more than $5.99 and even that's high. Gristedes here is selling it for $7.59! I'd rather go to The Food Emporium at nearby Union Square and buy the Key Food storebrand for less...

Snapshot: Gristedes - Manhattan

Here's a quick photo of another Gristedes in Manhattan. For some unknown reason, I saved this file on my computer as just "The Other Gristedes". Looks like it's actually at 1343 Lexington Ave, Manhattan, NY.

Snapshot: Gristedes - Chelsea

Another competitor of the Ideal Marketplace and Fairway  in Chelsea, Manhattan, NYC is this Gristedes Megastore, only marginally larger than Ideal and about the size of Fairway. Gristedes is, however, far more expensive than Ideal or Fairway. Gristedes is a wholesale customer of Wakefern Food Corp and sells the ShopRite storebrand. I don't see how it's still hanging in there as it's generally agreed to be in the bottom five supermarkets of New York City.
