New Market Opened: 1984 Owner:  Huong Le Previous Tenants:  Kuszmar's Market (open in 1961) > Cal's Market (open in 1991) Cooperative:  none Location:  109 Bridge St, Salem, MA Photographed:  May 14, 2022 Today's visit is a quick one: New Market in northern Salem, on a peninsula that extends north of downtown. This store is right around 2000 square feet, and clearly has been a grocery store for a long time. Historical information is limited, but looking at Newspapers.com, the building was Kuszmar's Market in 1961 and Cal's Market in 1991. Other than that, I don't have much more information to offer. Today, the store is a pretty updated liquor and convenience store . Tomorrow, The Market Report crosses the Essex Bridge over to Beverly for two stores in the southern part of town!

Soriya Market Opened: 2013 Owner:  Jack Khy Previous Tenants:  New Market (ca. 2008-2013) Cooperative:  none Location:  551 Summer St, Lynn, MA Photographed:  August 3, 2019 Welcome to Lynn! Our first stops here are two small grocers in the southwestern part of town, beginning with Soriya Market. It's about 2500 square feet and primarily focuses on Asian foods. Lynn has several eastern Asian communities along with people from Latin America, and our other stop today is also eastern Asian foods. We'll see a handful of Latin stores, too, as we pass through the city. Unfortunately I haven't been inside Soriya and I'm not entirely sure what part of Asia is represented here, but the name Soriya can come from Persian or Khmer origins, or southeastern Asia. If I'm not mistaken, the language printed on the awning here is Thai. As for the store, it's been here since 2013, when it replaced a small grocer called New Market that had opened around 2008.
