TOUR: ShopRite - Hillsborough, NJ

ShopRite of Hillsborough Owner: Robert Sumas / Village Super Market Opened:  ca. 1985 Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  601 US-206, Hillsborough, NJ Photographed:  July 2020 The ShopRite of Hillsborough, NJ is the southernmost northern New Jersey Village Super Market-owned ShopRite. Wow, that's a really bad sentence, let's try that again. So Village Super Market, which owns a lot of ShopRites in northern New Jersey, also has some in the southernmost part of the state, but there's a big gap between Hillsborough, the farthest-south in the northern NJ group, and those along US-30 which connects Atlantic City to Philadelphia, more or less. Those include Absecon, Hammonton, Galloway, and a few others. Those are a good 65 miles south of Hillsborough, and the space is filled mostly by Saker and Perlmutter ShopRites on the east coast of the state, and Ravitz, Brown, and Saker again (and maybe others?) on the western side. Does that make any sense?

Original Tenant:  Mazur's Foodtown Address: 390 US-206, Hillsborough, NJ Opened:  1969 Closed:  1990 Later Tenants:  Cost Cutters (1990s-2008) > vacant Photographed:  January 2021 Just south from today's other store, the Weis Markets on 206 in Hillsborough , is this former Foodtown. A local blogger has a fantastic history of the store here , which you should absolutely go read before we move on. In the 1990s, as Hillsborough transitioned from a solidly rural community to a solidly suburban community, big-box retail sprung up with the new housing. To the north, Pathmark located itself in the Hillsborough Promenade; to the south, Village Super Market opened a ShopRite in Nelson's Corner, and Edwards set up shop in the Hillsborough Centre. These larger, modern supermarkets collectively put the smaller, older locations of this Foodtown and A&P. Today, everything has changed almost: Pathmark is now Weis; Edwards became Stop & Shop, which then closed and was subdivide

TOUR: Weis Markets - Hillsborough, NJ

Weis Markets Opened: 2013 Previous Tenants:  Pathmark Location:  315 US-206, Hillsborough, NJ Photographed:  July 2020 Pathmark was best known for its large urban locations in lower-income neighborhoods, but there were a few stores scattered throughout the affluent suburbs of New Jersey. Most of those locations closed before the chain went under, such as Livingston where the median household income is roughly $165,000, or here in Hillsborough where the median household income is $105,000. The Hillsborough Pathmark closed around the same time as Livingston, with Weis Markets (a PA-based chain) coming in to the 55,000 square foot space by 2013 . It's been a heck of a long time since we last saw a Weis, which was actually down in Boonsboro, MD in May of 2019. I've always had a fondness for Weis, but I never really caught on to doing much shopping at their stores -- partially because of the locations, but also partially because I found the product mix odd and the prices too high
