Wrapping up our Former A&P Week with a quick look at a former supermarket in Oakland, where we recently saw the ShopRite. The former supermarket has been divided into three smaller businesses, and although the facade has been redone, it's still instantly recognizable as a former A&P. The building immediately backs up to what was previously a Grand Union in a much larger facility. It's located at 340 Ramapo Valley Rd, Oakland, NJ.

Scroll down for the original post. Seabra Foods' Kearny store, a supermarket of roughly 26,000 square feet just outside Newark, was built in the 1950s as an A&P. A&P closed in the 1990s, with Seabra opening shortly thereafter. Produce is on the left side of the store, with deli, butcher, and seafood on the back wall. Packaged meats and dairy are actually in a grocery aisle -- a somewhat unusual arrangement -- with frozen foods on the right side of the store and a liquor store in the front-right corner. Inside, there's almost nothing left over from A&P, as the Portuguese grocer did a major renovation when they moved in. If you enjoyed our Northeastern PA week, you're in luck! We're going back up to Towanda, another small NEPA town. Our store today is just north of downtown at 387 York Ave. It's a Hurley's Fresh Market IGA that has found a home in a former A&P Centennial. I'm pretty sure the Family Dollar sign would have been A&P's original sign. Hurley's renovated and expanded the store in 2012. You can read more about the expansion on page six of this report . It looks as though the Hurley's sign seen to the right here would have been installed after A&P moved out. Thoughts?

This store is a 1950s-era or earlier store that was a supermarket until the 1980s or 90s. The entrance and parking lot are located in the back of the store. As of the time of photography (June 2018), the store was still using A&P's Best Cellars branding. The independent owner may have purchased the name from A&P. We're back in New Providence again for this week's first store tour! A week ago, we saw the Central Farmers Market in town in half of a former A&P. As you'll recall from reading Acme Style, the A&P moved to the Village Shopping Center in downtown New Providence in 2010, A&P's last new-build store. It was, of course, a former 1970s-era ACME, so it was rather ironic when ACME returned to the location in A&P's beautiful, brand-new facility back in 2015. Here's my previous nighttime picture. I went back during the day and got some more exterior pictures, as well as a full interior tour. These photos are from my visit in April 2018. The new store's entrance and exit are located here on the corner, but the original ACME building faced the "front" of the store, which is to the left in the above photo.
