Original Grocery Tenant: Grand Union Address: 32 S Middletown Rd, Nanuet, NY Opened:  1990s Closed:  2001 Later Tenants:  Stop & Shop (2001-2022) > Floor & Decor Photographed:  August 12, 2022 This store doesn't look much like a Grand Union, and that's thanks to an extensive exterior renovation by Stop & Shop, but it was constructed as one in the 1990s replacing an older store across the street. The 58,000 square foot store was sold to Stop & Shop in Grand Union's bankruptcy in 2001, then moved across the street into a former Fairway Market at the Shops at Nanuet in 2020. If we look carefully and use our imagination a little bit, we can tell this building has Grand Union-style bones. The middle segment is clearly new, but built around a distinctive Grand Union awning. There wasn't that much time between Stop & Shop's closure and the repurposing of the location as a Floor & Decor -- only about two years -- but I managed to get there and ...

Stop & Shop Opened: 2020 Previous Tenants:  Fairway Market (2013-2019) Location:  101 Market St E, Nanuet, NY Photographed:  August 12, 2022 Welcome to the current Stop & Shop in Nanuet! The store moved from a former Grand Union across the street in 2020, following the 2019 closure of Fairway in this space. We can take a look inside Fairway right before its opening thanks to an extensive photo gallery from Patch. The 66,000 square foot store became a Stop & Shop, and it's one of the nicest Stop & Shops in this area -- maybe even overall. That said, there's a lot left from Fairway, and that's part of the reason it's very nice. We enter to a large, spacious produce department, with bakery, deli, and prepared foods behind that. Meat and seafood are on the back wall, with frozen/dairy on the right side and pharmacy -- something Fairway wouldn't have had -- in the front right corner. Rockland Great Farm Owner: unknown Opened:  2016 under current ownership; 2003 previously Cooperative:  none Location:  406 Nanuet Mall S, Nanuet, NY Photographed:  August 12, 2022 Welcome to the Rockland Great Farm! The rather unassuming 5,000 square foot greengrocer shop actually has a very exciting secret hiding inside it. Before we get there, the store is mostly a produce market, with produce taking up most of the sales floor and a small, apparently closed seafood counter in the back left corner. A small grocery, dairy, and frozen selection is on the left side of the store. Can anyone spot the supermarket history here? That's right, this store somehow has an original Grand Union Clean, Fresh & Good ceiling fixture in it! It's an incredibly difficult thing to photograph, but a really impressive one. This was my first time seeing one in person. It's amazingly well preserved! How many others still exist out there? This is the only one I can think of off the top...

This one was around 30,000 square feet and constructed in the 1970s just south of what's now the Shops at Nanuet which was formerly the Nanuet Mall. At some point, around the early 1990s, Grand Union moved roughly across the street to a new-build, 58,000 square foot store.
