Memorabilia Day 8: Publix & Weis!

Publix and Weis, two significant regional chains on the east coast in Florida and Pennsylvania, respectively, don't appear too much in the memorabilia I find, but we have a few! Publix Here's some Publix trucks! While I don't know the exact date of either of these, the below one is definitely newer. Weis And speaking of trucks, here's a 1970s-era toy truck from Weis! I love the font and the cloud logo here. I bought this one at an antique store in central PA, not far from Weis's home of Sunbury . And one more spice tin, this time from a classic Weis package! Tomorrow we're wrapping up our memorabilia feature with a look at, well, everything else we haven't seen yet.

TOUR: Weis Markets - Honesdale, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  Grant's > Kmart > Insalaco's > Mr. Z's (1999-2008) Location:  1199 Texas Palmyra Hwy, Honesdale, PA Photographed:  May 28, 2023 I really enjoy shopping at Weis from time to time, even though there's none too close to me, but the truth is many of their stores are a bit boring. The Honesdale one has a bit of interesting history, though! This store was built as a Grant's department store, later Kmart, and then an Insalaco's supermarket (owned by Penn Traffic). Weis has been here since 2008, and they appear to have renovated the store roughly immediately after they opened (or maybe before -- I don't know what the transition process was like). We enter to a very nice grand aisle, although we can tell the bones are older, with produce in the front right corner. As we proceed down the grand aisle, we enter the hot food and deli area with those service counters on the left side in an island, then seafood at the ...

TOUR: Weis Markets - Duryea, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants: Mr. Z's (early 1990s-2008) Location: 70 Phoenix St, Duryea, PA Photographed: December 22, 2018 and August 12, 2020 The Weis Markets in Duryea is a bit of a strange store, located somewhat outside of town across railroad tracks from the main street. It's only barely visible from Main Street, but the 40,000 square foot store has been going strong for around 30 years, first as a Mr. Z's (likely built after Weis purchased Mr. Z's, or else renovated very shortly after opening), and then from 2008 to the present, as a Weis. A quick nighttime drive-by shot from 2018. The rest of the pictures are from the summer of 2020. We enter to the grand aisle on the right side of the store. Pharmacy is in the front right corner with deli and seafood in an island opposite produce. Bakery and meat are on the back wall, with grocery aisles behind the deli/seafood island and dairy on the far left side of the store. And I needed to get to this s...

Snapshot: Weis Markets - Plains, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2008 Previous Tenants:  Mr. Z's (1980s-2008) Location:  5 N River St, Plains, PA Photographed:  December 22, 2018 Today's snapshot is a quick look at the Weis Markets in Plains, PA, built in the 1980s as a Mr. Z's IGA, then acquired by Weis in the 90s and ultimately converted to the Weis brand in 2008. Here's a look at the 31,000 square foot store in 2008 as a Mr. Z's! Up next, we're headed to West Pittston and Pittston, about four miles north along the Susquehanna River. Come back to The Market Report tomorrow to see our next tour!

TOUR: Weis Markets - Montoursville, PA

Weis Markets Opened: 2011 Previous Tenants:  Scot's Lo-Cost (1990s-2011) Location:  801 N Loyalsock Ave, Montoursville, PA Photographed:  August 15, 2022 It's been a while since we've seen a very new and large Weis, or at least since we've toured one. So how about we take a look around Montoursville? It's not huge, at just under 50,000 square feet, but it's certainly spacious and big enough. And while it is nice and freshly renovated with the second-gen Fresh Market decor, it actually wasn't built with this decor -- or as a Weis at all. It was built as a Scot's Lo-Cost supermarket, owned by Weis, in the 1990s. In 2011, Weis switched the store over to their main banner and did what appears to be an extensive renovation on the store. In a pretty standard Weis Fresh Market layout, we enter to the grand aisle with produce on the left side, and prepared foods, deli, cheese, and bakery on the right side, with meat and seafood at the back. Meats extend down th...
