But you may not have heard of New Hartford, a small town of just 6600 in Litchfield County, around 15 miles northwest of the city of Hartford. New Hartford had a longtime independent supermarket called Marandino's, in business since 1963 at this mall. The store of just under 30,000 square feet was first listed for sale in 2019, but it seems the sale didn't close until the summer of 2020 when Mike Fernandez, who owns two Foodtowns in Queens (Bayside and Forest Hills), bought the supermarket and its strip mall. It's time for our first Trader Joe's in a while! Our contributor Lars brings us this store, which opened in 2005 and takes up around 11,000 square feet in a strip mall just across from the Westfarms mall, although I don't know the history of this building or if there was previously another supermarket in this spot or elsewhere in this strip mall. Inside, it looks much like other Trader Joe's, although this one does have a slightly older feeling -- is it the darker floor? I feel like most of the newer Trader Joe's I'm seeing have light concrete floors. And a look at the front-end... We're very close to the city of Hartford here, but before we go into the city, there's one more western CT stop we need to make! We're going to be heading around 15 miles northwest of the city ...

Stew Leonard's Farm Fresh Foods Owner: Stew Leonard, Jr Opened:  2007 Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  3475 Berlin Tpk, Newington, CT Photographed:  November 22, 2022 Welcome to a really terrible post about the Stew Leonard's in Newington! The store, which opened in 2007 and sprawls over 100,000 square feet, looks much like the Paramus location inside although it's older and larger. You can see plenty of pictures inside and outside on Google Maps . These days, Stew Leonard's has seven locations with one more on the way in Clifton, NJ in the former Seasons Supermarket . Newington is about eight miles outside of Hartford, and we'll be in Hartford in just a few days! First, we're going to look at another store just outside of Hartford in West Hartford, right here on The Market Report!

Key Food Supermarkets Owner: unknown Opened:  2021 Previous Tenants:  Save-A-Lot (ca. 2010-2020) Cooperative:  Key Food Stores Location:  60 E Main St, New Britain, CT Photographed:  July 9, 2023 Welcome to New Britain! New Britain is a larger town of around 75,000 people, and accordingly, has more supermarkets than some of the smaller towns around. There's an ALDI way to the north of town, a Stop & Shop to the northeast in Newington and another just west of downtown New Britain, and even more in and immediately around downtown. An America's Food Basket has been at the Four Star Plaza north of town since 2017 in a former Save-A-Lot, a Price Rite is just outside of downtown, a Compare Foods is to the northwest, and a CTown is right in the middle of downtown. The newcomer to the New Britain supermarket scene has made its home in a roughly 25,000 square foot space previously occupied by Save-A-Lot. Gnazzo's Food Center Owner: Kenny Gnazzo Opened:  1934 previously; ca. late 1980s in present building Cooperative:  IGA Location:  73 East St, Plainville, CT Photographed:  fall 2020 Contributor:  Lars D. Welcome to Gnazzo's Food Center! This Plainville institution has been in business since 1934, but relocated to its current building in the late 1980s. The building is around 18,000 square feet. I can't offer too much of a layout description because I've never actually been here and these pictures are coming to us courtesy of our contributor Lars D., but it looks like produce and dairy are on the right side of the store with meats on the back. It looks like deli and bakery are on the far left side in the last aisle, with frozen in the front left corner. It looks to me like the store probably hasn't gotten a renovation since it opened in the late 80s.
