Happy 4th and happy 250th birthday of America! Also, welcome to the grand opening of Xtra Fresh Market, a small independent grocer that opened last month on northeast Philly's Castor Avenue business corridor. Occupying a former office building, this supermarket occupies somewhere around 7500 square feet, so it's quite small. It's a little under a mile from Castor Avenue's new Compare & Save supermarket. That difference seems to be kind of significant. This store is much closer to a major retail center with ACME, Target, Giant, and Sprouts, and a bit removed from the business district where Compare & Save is. Even just a couple weeks after its opening, this store seems to be getting less traffic than Compare & Save.
Above, a photo just before the opening to the left, and a photo once the store opened on the right. The store is oriented with its front-end along the windows here in the front, and produce in the front-left corner just next to the entrance. Frozen and a tiny deli counter are in the rest of the first aisle, with meats on the back wall and dairy in the last aisle on the right side.
The store has a fresh new feel, but it doesn't seem to be getting much foot traffic (yet, at least). The produce looked like it had been sitting for a while. And I visited within minutes of leaving the packed Cousin's Grocery Market, yet I was one of just three customers in the store. It remains to be seen if this store will grow its business over time (or maybe there's simply a busier time than when I was there).
Packaged meats and frozen foods here in the first aisle, with the tiny deli just barely visible to the left at the end of the aisle above. The much larger service butcher counter lines the back wall.
This store is supplied by Krasdale, and uses Krasdale brand products. In fact, the original signage posted here advertised a Bravo coming soon. For whatever reason, it opened as Xtra Fresh instead.
It's good to see a new independent supermarket opening, but it doesn't seem that this one is a slam-dunk. We'll have to see how it evolves over time. In the meantime, here's this weekend's other posts!
