To wrap up our Brooklyn tour, here's a recap of what we saw. Enjoy!

Missed Stores - Bay Ridge/Sunset Park

Despite my rather exhaustive (and exhausting, that day) coverage of the various supermarkets in Bay Ridge and Sunset Park, I did miss some. So here's a look at what we didn't see in those two neighborhoods. All photos are from Google Maps. Balady Food Market at 7128 5th Ave, Bay Ridge. Newly renovated Halal & Middle Eastern food standby. (I'm disappointed I didn't make it to this one.) Pineapple Farm at 7402 5th Ave, Bay Ridge. Corner greengrocer shop. E Food Supermarket at 4901 5th Ave, Sunset Park. Store featuring virtual food. Just kidding! Chinese-centered fish and produce market. El Nuevo Pueblo at 4921 5th Ave, Sunset Park. 24-hour produce and grocery shop featuring Latin and natural products. Marketa Los Fernandez at 5013 5th Ave, Sunset Park. I cannot explain the name. Latin-centered butcher shop and produce market. One more post tomorrow on our Brooklyn tour!

TOUR: Met Fresh - Bay Ridge

Welcome to the last post of Bay Ridge/Sunset Park! And I've saved (one of) the best for last. The store, which is owned by Ali Hamdan, opened in 2013 and was expanded in 2016. It was used as an example in this article about NYC's "hyperlocal" supermarkets -- a theme we've seen throughout this group of stores. I thought this would be a nice shot to begin with, with Met Fresh in front of the Verrazano Narrows Bridge. If you're a New York City supermarket, the best location you can have is on a corner like this. Maximum visibility in all directions! You can see where the store used to end, where the vertical brown stripe is visible on the facade. You enter to produce in the first aisles, with meat along the back wall, seafood in the far back corner, and deli/bakery in the last aisle. The store's famous Beer Cave is in the front corner opposite the entrance. This White Rose-turned-C&S truck was just pulling up as I was leaving, but I t...

Snapshot: Key Food (former) - Bay Ridge

Quick look at a former Key Food at the corner of 3rd Ave and 95th St. The supermarket, which closed in approximately 2006, was owned by Dan's Supreme Supermarkets, a family-owned group of Key Food stores that still has several locations operating. Here's a look at Key Food when the store was in business. The photo above is from Bay Ridge Blog at this link . Man, can Walgreens make a building boring. At least they didn't knock it down entirely. The store is located at 9408 3rd Ave, Brooklyn. One more Bay Ridge store on Monday -- Met Fresh!

TOUR: Metropolitan CityMarket - Bay Ridge

Although ASG's Metropolitan CityMarket chain opened back in 2014 to much fanfare, only two locations remain. One is over in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn at 1142 Bedford Ave, and the other is here in Bay Ridge. Notice in the logo, as well as on the storefront sign, the "Met" of "Metropolitan" is highlighted, probably to suggest the affiliation with Met Foodmarkets. (Aside from the fact that Met has been around for a long time, I'm not entirely sure why you'd want to associate yourself with Met. The brand is weak and almost universally disliked among customers.) Metropolitan CityMarket is the only store on 4th Ave that we've seen in the southern part of Bay Ridge. You enter on the left side of the storefront, with a small deli immediately inside to the left. Produce lines the first aisle, with meat along the back wall. The produce department is clearly quite upscale, with a significant selection of organic products even in a small space, plus thin...
