While Associated Grocers Northeast -- primarily a cooperative of independent supermarkets -- does own some stores, they tend to acquire their own members or other independents when they're going out of business (see here). But that's not the case all the time, as evidenced by this 22,000 square foot supermarket. This store was built from the ground up by AGNE in 2016, and is a beautiful store with lots of local personality. Let's check it out!
Produce and bulk foods are in the first aisle, with an expanded bulk grain and spice selection like what we've seen in some of the natural food stores. Deli, bakery, and meat line the back wall, with frozen and dairy on the left side of the store. Beer and wine are then in the front-left corner.
AGNE seems just as comfortable supporting independent supermarkets as they are running their own stores. This store is gorgeous but also full of local products, unique selections, and all around an interesting collection of items you wouldn't find at a big chain store.
And the store itself is fun, with a wooden beam structure running over the grocery aisles holding up the aisle markers, big maple leaves on the walls, and heck, even a maple tree in the dairy aisle. (Okay, not a real one, but it's still a nice added touch.)
You can take a look at the product mix here to see what I mean about the product mix in storebrands alone. Food Club items for the everyday things, along with Full Circle for organic products, and those both come from Topco. But then Cadia and Made With brands -- kind of a bit more specialized than Full Circle, a slight step up -- come from KeHE.
Bulk spices at the back of the first aisle, and the service counters then line the rest of the back wall.
This store has a pitched roof, but instead of the roof sloping down to the two sides of the store, it instead slopes down to the front and back. This allows for a higher ceiling in the middle of the last aisle, where Jericho Market has a couple of maple trees with sap buckets...
...can't say I've seen that one before!
Another small general store is just south of here, and that's where we're off to tomorrow!
