Coming Soon!

Up next: the state of Connecticut! We have a few stores scattered across the northern part of the state, with three in the greater Danbury area (the first city you enter when you cross the border from Brewster, see here and here), six in the Hartford area, and the remainder along the southern coast of the state (where it borders the Long Island Sound), stopping in the cities of Bridgeport, Norwalk, Stamford, and Greenwich with a few others in between. Most of our stores are going to be here on The Market Report, with a few over on The Independent Edition and one on Grocery Archaeology. So generally we're starting on the western end of the state, crossing the middle of the state, then circling down to the southern end and completing the circuit back to the southwestern corner of the state. Tomorrow we have a store tour at the ShopRite of Danbury, the store in the above graphic!

TOUR: DeCicco & Sons - Brewster, NY

DeCicco Family Markets Owner: John DeCicco Opened: 2010 Previous Tenants: Linens N' Things Cooperative: Krasdale Location: 50 Independent Way, Brewster, NY Photographed: May 2019 Tucked away in the back of a large mall that also includes a Home Depot, a Kohl's, and a Michael's is this 40,000 square foot DeCicco & Sons location. I believe it's the largest store, taking over a closed Linens N' Things in 2010. It's certainly the most spectacular (sorry, Ardsley and Larchmont). This store seems to be a big draw, even though it's a little hard to get to. Brewster has three supermarkets: this one, an ACME/former A&P to the east, and an IGA to the south, which is where we'll be heading next. This store also served as my lunch stop between touring 26 supermarkets, and I sampled multiple items from the hot food bar. Glazed sesame salmon over sauteed kale, rice pilaf, spinach and ricotta dumpling, and a meatball with homemade marinara. Delicious! Now onto the …

TOUR: Tops Friendly Markets - Carmel, NY

Tops Friendly Markets Opened: 2018 Previous Tenants: Ames (1960s-?) > Hannaford (2008-2018) Location: 1936 US-6, Carmel, NY Photographed: May 2019 At the east end of the strip mall where we saw a former Grand Union yesterday is a 62,000 square foot Tops Friendly Markets. It's a former Hannaford that was sold to Tops when Hannaford parent Delhaize and Stop & Shop parent Ahold merged, likely due to the store's proximity to the newly built Mahopac Stop & Shop. In that store tour, I mentioned that the Stop & Shop didn't blow me away. This store absolutely did, and I wonder why they decided to keep the smaller Stop & Shop instead of the larger and far more deluxe Hannaford while canceling the plans for the Stop & Shop and perhaps selling the store. The attractive, if somewhat bland, exterior is all original to Hannaford. Inside, we'll see that Tops remodeled the store fully while keeping Hannaford's layout intact. There's an interesting wrinkle t…
