Leon Marketplace - West New York, NJ (coming soon)

Leon Marketplace Opening:  TBA Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  unknown Location:  4901 Bergenline Ave, West New York, NJ Photographed:  March 6, 2026 A newly-built supermarket is coming to the busy Bergenline Avenue corridor in West New York. It'll be an independent store called Leon Marketplace (león being the Spanish word for lion, hence the logo). It looks like it'll be around 10,000 square feet, so on the smaller side but definitely a full supermarket. This was the best shot I could get of the inside through the windows. You can see the basic setup, and it looks like the store will be quite nice. From what I can find online, no word on who the owner might be nor what group it might be a part of (or what company would supply it). This store clearly looks close to opening, but I haven't heard any opening date announced yet. Click on the picture above to zoom in and see the detail of what the interior will look like! I'll be back once...

Hudson County Music Video!

Because I have way too much free time, I'm proud to introduce The Market Report's first... MUSIC VIDEO! If you couldn't get enough of our Hudson County group, then you're in luck! Now, you can see random photos from the group in no particular order compiled in a music video for no reason other than... "why not?" Seriously, though -- I hope this is at least a little fun, because I think I might make some more going forward. Thoughts?

Snapshot: Carniceria Latina - WNY, NJ

Quick glance at a corner carniceria (butcher shop) across from Super on Palisade... Creative name. "Carniceria Latina" means Latin Butcher Shop in Spanish. However, this place seems to be a neighborhood institution, and it even has a website . I did not go in, but this looks like a real butcher shop -- not a grocery store with a meat counter.

Super Supermarket - West New York, NJ

Super Supermarket Opened:  ca. 2014 Owner:  Ali Abtala Previous Tenants:  Bilal Superfood (open by 2000) > Associated (closed ca. 2014) Cooperative:  General Trading/Retail Grocers Group Location:  5208 Palisade Ave, West New York, NJ Photographed:  October 27, 2024 Before we begin, just a heads up: this was originally posted in November 2017, but was rewritten with new photos in March 2026. Now for the post! What makes a supermarket a Super Supermarket? Actually, that's up for debate. In fact, a recent lawsuit centered around the fact that the name "Super Supermarket" was too generic to have much trade value. So as a result, New Jersey has at least three different operators who use the name Super Supermarket. Other than the fact that they're all supplied by the same wholesaler, they have nothing in common. The West New York location here shares ownership with one in Elizabeth , while locations in Orange, Paterson, and Haledon share ownership but one...

TOUR: Extra Supermarket - WNY, NJ

Heading just a block east of Fiesta yesterday is this Extra Supermarket, not affiliated with the Extra Supermarkets chain. While that Extra is part of Retail Grocers and is supplied by General Trading Co. of Carlstadt, this Extra is supplied by Krasdale Foods . It's a member of AIM (the Association of Independent Merchants). Extra is on the ground floor of what appears to be a large apartment building, and has a private parking lot in back -- rare for this area. Palisade Ave, the road this store is on (pictured here), is certainly no Bergenline. It's a somewhat sleepy residential street, so it's unusual that a fairly major supermarket would be located on it. I'd love to know what this sign would have said; I doubt Extra installed it. Unfortunately we can only go back about ten years on Google Maps' street view. Anyone know what this was previously? The quiet street did allow me to get some photos of the storefront. The store is actually pretty large,...

TOUR: Fiesta Supermarket - WNY, NJ

We're hopping directly across Bergenline Ave from Four Seasons to check out the independent Fiesta Supermarket. Fiesta was formerly an IGA but is now affiliated with the Retail Grocers Group. The same owners, as I mentioned briefly in the Four Seasons post, own the Fiesta Party Supplies (kind of a Panera Bread  or ATM machine  situation there!), and the Frutería Fiesta just south of 56th St.  Image from Google Maps Street View. Image from my August 2017 visit (yesterday's Bonus Snapshot ). The Fruteria is an interesting store, with a selection of produce and a small deli with a juice bar. Since it's only about a block away from Fiesta Supermarket, they probably try to prevent as much overlap as possible. The Supermarket doesn't have a juice bar, but they do have produce and a deli. Another hand-painted awning. A very nice touch that makes it a more personal experience. Close-up on the graphics on the awning. It looks like the building has been p...
