Update: Green Way Markets - Ridgewood, NJ

Green Way Markets Owner: Robin Estevez Opened:  February 2021 Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  112 N Maple Ave, Ridgewood, NJ Photographed:  June 2022 We return to the Green Way Markets of Ridgewood, which just finished its renovation after opening in a former Kings in early 2021. I was frustrated to see basically no change at the time of my December 2021 visit , even questioning whether the renovation was happening at all. Little did I know that in the weeks immediately following my visit the renovation did, in fact, begin in earnest. And it wrapped up in, I believe, late May when they held their grand reopening. I was very impressed with how the store looked when I went back just a few weeks ago, although the renovation was a little limited in scope. Quite the first impression, though! Check out the floor plan in the January post linked above. You'll see that the produce department and the liquor store are now side-by-side, rather than one in fr...

TOUR: Kings Food Markets - Ridgewood, NJ

Kings Food Markets Opened: 1977 Previous Tenants:  Food Fair > Finast Location:  112 N Maple Ave, Ridgewood, NJ Photographed:  December 2020 Today's store tour is one of the Kings that was not sold to ACME in the 2020 bankruptcy, and is expected to close by the end of this month. The 15,000 square foot store was built in the 1950s as a Food Fair, then taken over by Finast somewhere around 20 years later. Kings moved in to the store in 1977. The Kings competes with a Stop & Shop (built as a Grand Union) one block behind it, as well as a Whole Foods across town. The grand aisle features a cheese island on the left side (just out of frame on the left here), with produce taking up most of the space and a liquor department at the back. Customer service is tucked away in the front corner to the right here. Seafood and meat are on the back wall with dairy on both sides of aisle 5 and frozen on both sides of aisle 6. These are the last two aisles, and both are shortened ...

TOUR: Stop & Shop - Ridgewood, NJ

Stop & Shop Opened: 2001 Previous Tenants:  Grand Union Location:  175 Franklin Ave, Ridgewood, NJ Photographed:  December 2020 Our first of two supermarkets here in Ridgewood is the Stop & Shop, built probably in the 70s as a Grand Union. Indications are that despite the store's cramped downtown location and small size at just 38,000 square feet, it's still a very profitable location because of the money that's been put into it. There's even a second floor (where the windows are on the right) that has a liquor department, which appears to be an outside business, and a pharmacy department. Interesting placement and combination. We enter to the grand aisle, with bakery in the front right corner and produce lining the rest of the first aisle. Deli and seafood are at the back of the grand aisle, with meats lining the rest of the back wall. Dairy and frozen are at the far side of the store. Notice the upgrades that Stop & Shop has done to the place, not only wi...
