Location:  90-80 US-206 N, Byram, NJ Photographed:  April 2020 Finishing up our Sussex County group with a very quick update here at the Byram ShopRite! After our initial tour in 2019 (with 2016 pictures), we return to see theat the exterior signage has been updated with the new logo. The interior has also been updated with the same decor swap we saw in Newton most recently. It's likely that the construction of this store put the A&P in Andover out of business. Well, we've finished up every supermarket in Sussex County! (There are a few former supermarkets around the county that I didn't quite make it to, so those can be coming to the blog our next time around.) Tomorrow I'll introduce our next group which is gonna be a fun one!

Original Tenant: A&P Address: 5 Lenape Rd, Andover, NJ Opened:  1970s Closed:  late 90s Later Tenants:  The Open Box Shop Photographed:  April 2020 Quite the interesting former A&P here in Andover, along route 206 just south of Newton. Now, it's not exactly a surprise that a supermarket couldn't survive here. This roughly 30,000 square foot store is located smack in the middle of this town of just 600 people. It's about five miles from the large stores we saw in Newton and roughly four miles north of the ShopRite in Byram. This store likely closed as an A&P in the late 1990s, and was an A&P Sav-A-Center in its final days. Acme Style has coverage of the store from back in 2009, when the A&P decor was all still up on the walls. We'll take a brief look inside now that The Open Box Shop, a discout store, has set up shop inside. Weis Markets Opened: 1990s Previous Tenants:  none Location:  121 Water St, Newton, NJ Photographed:  July 2020 It's time for our second stop in Newton! We saw the ShopRite immediately next door today also, as well as Hayek's Market downtown. This store, which is roughly 10,000 square feet smaller than the ShopRite but, as we'll see, far better organized, was constructed in the early 90s as Weis's first New Jersey store. It was extensively renovated around 2012, and here's a look at what it previously looked like. It's looking quite good, although we can tell that the bones are older than, say, Franklin . We enter to the grand aisle on the right side of the store, with produce on the left side and bakery, deli, and seafood lining the right side and back of the grand aisle. Location:  127 Water St, Newton, NJ Photographed:  July 2020 It's a big day here in Newton! We are touring three stores in town, starting with this 68,000 square foot ShopRite. The store is preparing for a significant renovation and expansion , which is set to include the property behind the store. All of 475 feet south is a Weis , and there's also an independent supermarket half a mile south in downtown Newton. Ah yes. Shop Rite The Market Place. Love the vintage(-looking?) signage here, although I don't believe the store is actually more than a few decades old. We enter to produce on the right side of the grand aisle, with deli on the left side, and bakery/seafood at the back.
