Walfood Market
Opened: May 2026Welcome to Walfood! What is Walfood, you might ask? It's not Walmart or Waldbaum's or Walgreens, but instead, a Chinese supermarket that's recently opened a location in the northern part of Flushing in Queens. It's large -- possibly as large as 40,000 square feet, making it one of the largest Asian grocers in Flushing -- and very modern and stylish inside.
The store is oriented at a 90-degree angle to the street, so the front-end runs along the left side wall. Produce is up at the front, with seafood and meat along the right side and frozen in the first aisle. The grocery aisles run front to back, and dairy/refrigerated foods are on the back wall. Nonfoods are in the last aisle on the left side.
This is the second Walfood supermarket in Queens -- the other is in a former Walgreens in Bayside, about three miles east. I don't know for sure that they're related, as the logos on the outside are different.
This is a new-build store, and it replaced a smaller Asian grocer on the same property. This is one of those newly-built supermarkets that truly feels new in all the ways. I don't know exactly what day this store opened, but it couldn't have been more than a week or two before I visited, I would bet, because of how shiny and new everything still was. In some places, it felt more like visiting a museum than visiting a grocery store.
There's a large section of live seafood on the right side of the store, and it continues in tanks that line the service seafood counter.
A 99 Ranch Market also recently opened in Flushing, and they've since opened a food court in the basement of that store. This store doesn't have any prepared foods or a seating area. I don't quite know how large the 99 Ranch is, but excluding its basement food court, I'd guess this is a bit larger. It certainly feels much more spacious than the congested 99 Ranch.
Frozen foods are here in the first few aisles, with the meat and seafood service counters visible to the right below...
I'm really struck by how attractive this store is. It's simple and elegant.
You can see that this store uses focused lighting in the aisles (like several other new stores) instead of just fluorescent tubes or something more traditional like that.
Given how pristine everything looks, I have to assume I was here soon after the store opened for business. Even so, kudos to this supermarket for keeping it in such pristine shape.
A look at the registers, which line the left-side wall of the store. (You can see the edge of the produce department in the picture below.)
That's all for this new supermarket, but here's a look at the rest of the posts for this weekend!
