Welcome to Clementon! I rarely get this far south in New Jersey -- we're about 30 miles east of Wilmington here, and almost 100 miles from the area where I live so this isn't a frequent destination of mine. But when I do get the chance to make it down here, I get to see some really interesting stores, including the new H Mart in Cherry Hill and this store, the spectacular new ShopRite of Cherrywood Plaza!Previous Tenants: Kmart

Okay, spectacular except for one thing: who approved the lettering on that sign? No, the S isn't falling down, it was simply installed wrong before opening. Here's what the lettering is supposed to look like. With that gripe out of the way, let's take an extensive tour of what must be one of the best ShopRites I've ever been to.
This 85,000 square foot store is on the site of a closed Kmart, and it opened at the end of last year replacing a much older store just down the street. More on that shortly. The new supermarket is massive, though definitely not the largest ShopRite out there. It's also essentially the standard for new stores from Zallie Family Markets, the owner of this one (which recently consolidated with a couple other Zallie family businesses).
The grand aisle is on the left side of the store, with produce straight ahead of the entrance and deli-prepared foods on the left side. A cafe is in the front-left corner, with service counters lining the left side of the grand aisle and the bakery at the back. Meat and seafood are on the back wall, with dairy and frozen on the right side. Pharmacy and floral are in the front-right corner.
Part of the reason this store feels so enormous is the extremely high ceilings, though I do like the airiness they lend the interior.
Packaged grab-and-go prepared foods between the entrance and the cafe. But somewhat bucking a trend in supermarkets lately, this selection exists alongside a lot of fresh-made food and self-serve bars, rather than instead of it.
Here we run into one other minor but noticeable signage problem: most of the "international cheeses" island is cut fruit, not cheese. The cheeses are mostly behind that island, and it again seems it's been that way since opening. How hard would it have been to either relocate the cheeses or change the sign before opening?
Small signage missteps aside, I actually love this decor. It's fun and vibrant without being over-the-top, and keeps the massive space visually interesting while not overly cluttered.
The lighting is also particularly well-done in this store, with track lighting illuminating certain displays and signs really tastefully.
I don't have too many specifics to back this up, but my general impression is that for several years (maybe even close to a decade), Wakefern was kind of coasting with solid but not exceptional stores for the most part. Now, the new stores and remodels coming from Wakefern members seem noticeably better -- better thought-out, more specifically targeting what people in the area are looking for, and a clear step up from other big-chain supermarkets.
Bakery and seafood at the back of the grand aisle...
Looking across the back wall of the store...
I like about this that it's a new store that truly feels like a new store, not a new store that simply feels like an upgraded older store. Everything is shiny and new, and the whole facility (right down to the floor and ceiling) really look new.
I was here early afternoon on a Friday, and it wasn't particularly crowded. I imagine this store does a good business, though, as all indications suggest it's a high-volume location.
Frozen foods are in an alcove on the front wall, with the aisles running parallel to the front wall.
Floral and pharmacy are just beyond that, towards the registers. Floral is actually in an island in the grocery aisles rather than being on a perimeter wall...
Even this hanging signage is really well-done, and feels like a step up.
Looking back towards dairy/frozen with pharmacy on the right...
So that's a spectacular store, and one of my favorites recently. But it gets better! We actually have some pictures of the old store before it closed...

...and that's all thanks to Jay of Sleeve Did It, whose retail tour videos are worth checking out. He sent me these pictures months ago -- before the old store closed, of course, and they kind of slipped my mind until I visited the new one myself. Sorry about that! The new one definitely doesn't have this glorious neon signage, that's for sure! In fact, I kind of love the retro look of the old store. But the facility was definitely reaching the end of its lifespan...
...though it didn't look too bad overall. Now here's the even better news: if you love these pictures, Sleeve Did It actually has a video tour of the store when it was fully operational and another shortly before it closed, so be sure to check those out!
A brief note: Zallie appears to have built this store as a Shop n Bag in 1973, switching to ShopRite in 1980. For now, the building is still there, but vacant.
Thanks again to Sleeve for these pictures, and be sure to come back for more news posts coming soon!
