Snapshot: Extra Supermarket - Elizabeth, NJ

The Market Report was on the scene almost two years ago to photograph the then-under construction supermarket at the Pointe Grande Plaza at 838 E Grand St, Elizabeth, NJ, and again when its first tenant, Supermarkets Plus IGA opened in May 2017. The store was officially out of business by late July 2018 and was quickly replaced by Extra Supermarkets, a five-store chain. Extra did not do any renovations, really -- what is there to do to a new-build store not even a year and a half old? -- but is currently in the process of stocking the shelves and will probably open within the next week. Graphics and window signs have been replaced and the storefront is awaiting a lit Extra sign. If you zoom in, you can even see where the Supermarkets Plus sign was. The bakery, immediately inside to the left, remains empty, but the deli is beginning to be stocked. Meat and produce are partially stocked as well. The grocery shelves are ready to go, and contain Parade private label products. T...

Supermarkets Plus IGA - Elizabeth, NJ

Happy mother's day everyone! We're back here in Elizabeth, NJ at the brand-new Supermarkets Plus IGA at Pointe Grande Plaza (nothing like adding an e when in doubt). It's at East Grand and Division Streets, just blocks from CitiGrocer . . . Supermarkets Plus has not yet been built in this aerial photo from Google Maps, and CitiGrocer is still under construction. So this area went from zero supermarkets to two brand-new (new-build!) supermarkets in just under two years. CitiGrocer, at about 40,000 square feet, opened in fall 2015, and Supermarkets Plus IGA opened on Cinco de Mayo of 2017. We saw the store early in its construction when it was planned to be a Foodtown, last September: The Regional Industries (a garbage-collection company) facility directly next door is not . . . um . . . appealing. So it was nice to see, when I returned a few weeks ago, that a fence has been put up between their property and the new development. You can see it to the left b...

Breaking News!

Key Food in Peekskill Closes Suddenly . . . Image still from YouTube . April 26, 2017 marked the end of the road for the Key Food Marketplace in Peekskill, NY, which had its grand opening April 7, 2016, meaning it was fully up and running for one year and 19 days. The store, after closing, still had its Grand Opening banners up. That's always sad. You can see in the picture above the store never even got a real sign, just an oversized banner. It also didn't take over the entire footprint of the A&P it replaced; you can see the vacant part in the windows above. It's unclear what exactly caused this store to close so abruptly, leaving all the products on the shelves and most employees and customers clueless. . . . To Be Replaced by Peekskill Green Grocers Peekskill Green Grocers is an independent supermarket owned and operated by Zayed "Junior" Dabashi , who also owns Key Food stores in Beacon, NY ; Mahopac, NY ; and Milford, PA - all o...
