This is one of two small grocers in downtown Barre, and it's very different from the other, AR Market. While that one is an upscale Italian specialty grocer, this one is a small, 3,000 square foot market that sells a small selection of discounted items. It opened in 2024.
This store has a small selection of basics from C&S under the Best Yet brand, but it's not a full supermarket so it's not exactly a full line of groceries. Another smaller grocer called Quality Market is just outside of town, and a bit further, there's a Hannaford, a Shaw's, a Market 32, and a Walmart Supercenter.
One thing to note about Granite City Market is that it's not Granite City Grocery. That was an effort to start a cooperatively owned grocery store here in Barre, launched in 2012 but dissolved before the store actually opened in 2021. As far as I can tell, there's no ongoing effort to develop a co-op grocery store here in Barre. But downtown Barre used to have a full supermarket, and we'll check it out on Monday. Plus, this weekend is going to be jam-packed with news posts, so tune in both tomorrow and Sunday for lots to see!
