Snapshot: Food Lion - Jefferson Davis North, Woodbridge, VA

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  13414 Jefferson Davis Hwy, Woodbridge, VA Photographed:  December 2021 Folks, this 33,000 square foot Food Lion in an unnamed strip mall at the corner of Jefferson Davis Highway and Gordon Boulevard is not particularly remarkable, as few Food Lions are. But it is our last Food Lion as we begin to wrap up our coverage of the mid-Atlantic area! We're all the way at the north end of Woodbridge here (which is home to several other Food Lions, too). We have one final Woodbridge store across the street from this one, which we'll be covering right here on The Market Report tomorrow!

Snapshot: Food Lion - Johns Island, SC

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  2770 Maybank Hwy, Johns Island, SC Photographed:  January 2022 We are here on Johns Island, about six miles west of downtown Charleston, for a look at this roughly 39,000 square foot Food Lion. It's been open since at least 2007, but I don't know much more about its history than that. It's one of two full supermarkets here on Johns Island, with the other about three miles west at Maybank Highway and Bohicket Road. We'll be headed there tomorrow for a tour here on The Market Report!

Snapshot: Food Lion - James Island, SC

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  1291 Folly Rd, James Island, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 Our next stop along Folly Road is this Food Lion, which appears to be on the older side of Food Lions but, like all the other ones we've seen recently, has the latest decor package inside and looks to have had some fixture updates too. It's just across the street from another supermarket, which we'll be taking a look at tomorrow!

Snapshot: Food Lion - West Ashley, Charleston, SC

Food Lion Opened: unknown Previous Tenants:  none Location:  2144 Savannah Hwy, West Ashley, Charleston, SC Photographed:  January 2022 The interchange where Interstate 526 ends and flows out into Savannah Highway, or US-17, is flanked by two supermarkets. To the west is this 37,000 square foot Food Lion, and to the east is a Piggly Wiggly in the Quadrangle Shopping Center. I'm really interested in the fact that the supermarkets here are so small -- I'd think nothing of a 75,000 square foot ShopRite, but we can barely get to 50,000 square feet here. Why is that? Anyway, tomorrow we're going to move east to see the Piggly Wiggly right here on The Market Report!

TOUR: Piggly Wiggly - Summerville, SC

Piggly Wiggly Owner: David Smith Opened:  2019 under current ownership; 1982 as Mr. K's Piggly Wiggly Previous Tenants:  none Location:  404 N Cedar St, Summerville, SC Photographed:  January 2022 Welcome to the Charleston area, and welcome to Summerville! This town of 50,000 people was a favorite summer destination of residents of Charleston prior to air conditioning because of its cooler, inland location (we're about 23 miles northwest of downtown Charleston) and is said to have healthy air and a good environment for breathing. It also has, at the north end of downtown, a 28,000 square foot Piggly Wiggly! Until 2019, it was owned by the Kersting family, when it was sold to the current owner David Smith. There was also another Piggly Wiggly in town at 10048 Dorchester Rd, a strip mall now home to a Lowes Foods. Beyond knowing that the store opened in 1982, I don't know much about this store's history. The one thing that does hit me very strongly -- even from the...

Snapshot: Food Lion - Janaf, Norfolk, VA

Food Lion Opened: 2012 Previous Tenants:  Food Lion (1997-2007) > Bottom Dollar Food (2007-2012) Location:  1235 N Military Hwy, Norfolk, VA Photographed:  December 2019 Yep, we couldn't go too many days here in Norfolk without seeing a Food Lion. This 39,000 square foot store was built in 1997 as a Food Lion but interestingly enough spent five years of its life as a Bottom Dollar Food. It seems that Ahold Delhaize has been pushing Food Lion more aggressively lower-end than it has been in the past. Their past stores were much more upscale, even just in appearance, like Shepherdstown . But I think the failure of Bottom Dollar left a lower-end hole in their operations, creating an opportunity to further distance Food Lion from the Ahold chains that also operate in their areas. For those who live in this area, is that a fair assessment? Anyway, don't forget to check out the former Farm Fresh across the street and the ALDI just south here . Tomorrow, we head over to Groc...

TOUR: Food Lion - Tidewater South, Norfolk, VA

Food Lion Opened: 1998 Previous Tenants:  none Location:  3530 Tidewater Dr, Norfolk, VA Photographed:  December 2019 It's our last Norfolk store tour! We still have about a week of other assorted stores but this is the final store tour. Another smaller Food Lion at just over 30,000 square feet. This one was built in 1998, and has also gotten the latest remodel. The layout more closely resembles Little Creek than Tidewater North , since they're of the same generation, although this one is noticeably smaller. Bakery/deli is to the right when you enter, with produce on the right side wall of the store. Meat/seafood line the back wall, with dairy/frozen on the left. Beer/wine are in the front left corner. The fixtures here are quite nice, and were likely updated after the store opened. Notice the slanted back wall. This store has a triangle taken out of the back right corner because of the street that runs behind it. This is another attractive but unremarkable Food Lion, d...
