Shop Fair Supermarkets - Bronx, NY (Soundview)

Shop Fair Supermarkets Opened: October 2025 Owner:  Anibal Rodriguez Previous Tenants:  Food City (open in 1978) > Rite Aid Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group Location:  1518 Westchester Ave, Bronx, NY Photographed:  October 29, 2025 Add it to the list: here's yet another New York City supermarket that has set up shop in a former drugstore! This former Rite Aid in the Soundview section of the Bronx is now the latest Shop Fair, just 9500 square feet. And like many of these other drugstores, this store was originally a supermarket. I don't have a full picture of its history, but one article I could find confirmed that it was a Food City in 1978. Rite Aid closed in 2023 or early 2024. This new Shop Fair has a lot in common with the store at 1510 St Nicholas Ave over in Manhattan, also a former Rite Aid that's become a Shop Fair owned by Anibal Rodriguez. And like that one, this store is small enough that they've made liberal use of the sidewalk space in front ...

Special Report: CTown Supermarkets - Soundview, Bronx, NY

CTown Supermarkets Owner: unknown Opened:  November 10, 2023 Previous Tenants:  Leptis Pharmacy > Walgreens Cooperative:  Krasdale Foods Location:  1612 Westchester Ave, Soundview, Bronx, NY Photographed:  December 15, 2023 Welcome to the Bronx! We've been here plenty of times before, but lately I've been getting serious about visiting supermarkets across NYC, including the Bronx where I've photographed a little over 3/4 of the stores. (If anyone is interested, I've done 100% of Manhattan supermarkets, 77% of Bronx supermarkets, 52% of Staten Island, 42% of Queens, and just 26% of Brooklyn... so I have plenty more to go.) This store is around 10,000 square feet and opened in November 2023 in a former Walgreens (which was Leptis Pharmacy before 2007). Independent pharmacies have thrived in New York City where chain pharmacies close left and right, both in the Bronx and across the city . And, as we've seen, many of these closed chain drugstores are making per...

TOUR: Western Beef Supermarket - Soundview North, Bronx, NY

In the 2015-16 A&P bankruptcy, the Pathmark at Bruckner Blvd and Leland Ave closed and was replaced after extensive renovation by a Western Beef Supermarket. It's worth noting that this store is across Bruckner from a ShopRite and just to the east along Bruckner from the Soundview Food Bazaar . Let's return to this graphic I made for the Food Bazaar post: So we've seen the Associated and Fine Fare to the north, and I just mentioned the Food Bazaar and ShopRite. We're at the Western Beef to the north, with the southern one being the Rosedale Ave location. The Key Food and Golden Mango to the southeast are our next two tours. The Associated to the southwest has become a Food Universe  and here are the Met Foods , the Compare Foods , and the CTown . Heading into the store (this being, I believe, the second newest Western Beef out there), we find a clean, bright, and extremely colorful produce department. There's basically nothing left from Pathm...

TOUR: Fine Fare Supermarkets - Soundview, Bronx, NY

Well, we've seen this store before. But now we're returning for a full tour! Built as a Food Fair, this store had a variation on the bounce arch that didn't bounce . It likely became a Pantry Pride and then a Key Food, converting to Fine Fare in 1993. The 28,000 square foot store is owned by Retail Grocers Group CEO Rudy Fuertes and was renovated around 2012. And I suppose that it's no surprise Fuertes' stores are some of the nicest and best taken care of Fine Fare locations. We enter this one to find a rather Food Bazaar-like layout, with produce and meat in a room to the right as you enter, with dairy on the back wall and frozen in the second-to-last aisle. Deli is in the front corner. I'm particularly a fan of the old Bronx pictures that are hanging over the produce and meat departments. A very nice local touch. The meat and produce room is an expansion to the store. Meanwhile, the first aisle is the usual wall of values (or main display, as...
