Brothers Marketplace Opened: 2019 Owner:  Michael Bozzuto Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  1 Broadway, Cambridge, MA Photographed:  February 22, 2020 We've seen several locations of the chain Roche Brothers now, and they also own Sudbury Farms and small-format, upscale Brothers Marketplace locations around the Boston area. In late 2024, Connecticut-based wholesaler Bozzuto's acquired all three chains . They also own Adams Hometown Markets and other assorted independents. Although generally the Roche Brothers and Sudbury Farms stores are rather upscale, Brothers Marketplace is a further step up. They're small stores, but angled more towards being gourmet markets than regular supermarkets. This Brothers Marketplace was a new-build store in 2019, and measures just 12,000 square feet. We return the Acton Roche Bros store with pictures from our contributor Andrew to see that a renovation is underway. It looks like it'll probably be a fairly minor remodel, with just a decor change since it doesn't look like more extensive construction work is coming. I believe this is the first Roche Bros remodel to begin after the chain has been acquired by Bozzuto's. This is an attractive store but is right across the street from a new Stop & Shop . Maybe the Stop & Shop is having more impact on this store than they had originally anticipated, or maybe they just felt that it's time for an update. Sudbury Farms Opened: unknown Owner:  Michael Bozzuto Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  none Location:  1177 Highland Ave, Needham, MA Photographed:  January 12, 2025 The Market Report arrives in Needham! I haven't spent a lot of time in Needham -- very little, in fact, and I've only been to this one store while passing through for another reason. Needham also has a Trader Joe's, but two of the three supermarkets in town are owned by local chain Roche Brothers. One is a very old-school Roche Brothers that recently got a major renovation , and the other is a Sudbury Farms that Roche Bros also owns. I'm not particularly clear on this store's history, but the building has been here since around 1960. Sudbury Farms started in Sudbury and either was always a Roche Brothers-owned store or was acquired by Roche Brothers (although I'm unsure when that would've been). The chain also previously had at least one other location, in Randolph, MA  near Brockton...

Opened: April 2015 Owner:  Michael Bozzuto Previous Tenants:  Filene's Department Store Cooperative:  none Location:  8 Summer St, Boston, MA Photographed:  July 7, 2019 and July 20, 2019 If the Macy's at Herald Square is New York's most famous department store, and Marshall Field's was Chicago's, in Boston it was Filene's. The department store chain went through several acquisitions and rebrands, and its Downtown Crossing location in Boston -- the largest, original, and flagship store -- became Filene's Basement, the first discount clothing store chain in the US. It finally closed in 2011 . The discount store occupied the actual basement of the multi-story building, and while other parts of the department store are occupied by offices and a Primark, the basement today is a modern, upscale Roche Brothers.
