TOUR: Fine Fare Supermarkets - North Plainfield, NJ

Fine Fare Supermarkets Owner: unknown Opened:  1996 Previous Tenants:  unknown Cooperative:  Retail Grocers Group Location:  100 Somerset St, North Plainfield, NJ Photographed:  July 2020 This Fine Fare is our second of three here on Somerset Street in North Plainfield -- check out United Halal here and World Supermarket here . The store has been expanded since it opened, and we'll see at the far end of the store where the owners moved into a second storefront, bringing the total size from about 7600 square feet to 10,000. It's quite possible that the store was originally a chain supermarket from the 1930s or so, though I couldn't definitively place it as any particular chain just by looking at it. Unfortunately, there aren't really any signs of a previous tenant inside either, although we do find a well-stocked and clean store with a lot to offer. An extraordinarily crowded store, though. Snapshot: Former Acme - North Plainfield, NJ

My own feeble coverage of this former Acme location is, of course, far inferior to Acme Style's, so go ahead and read that here ! The famous large Acme sign is still intact, even 15 years after Acme closed and five years after Acme Style wrote that post. At the time of Acme Style's coverage, CVS shared the building with a Citi Bank, which has since closed. The space is now vacant. According to Acme Style, this corner of the store was an expansion containing a bakery department. Going by the typical layout of stores of this era, produce lined the right side wall with deli in the back right corner, meats along the back wall, milk in the back left corner, and bakery in the front left corner. The store is located at 780 US-22 E, North Plainfield, NJ.

Snapshot: Asian Food Markets - North Plainfield, NJ

I'm sure there are other people who have driven by a store a thousand times but you never go in. That's the case with this store for me. I can't say the store's facade is too exciting. Or the name, for that matter. Regardless, Asian Food Markets is a successful chain with seven New Jersey and New York locations. I'd driven past the Supremo in Irvington so many times also, on the Parkway, until I eventually just decided to go there one day. So maybe I'll do the same here...stay tuned!
