Himalayas General Store - Manchester, NH

Himalayas General Store Opened: 2012 Owner: Radhika Acharya Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants Cooperative: none Location: 359 Elm St, Manchester, NH Photographed: January 8, 2025 How familiar are you with Bhutanese food? Scratch that, how familiar are you with Bhutan? The tiny Himalayan country isn't particularly well-known here in the west, but there are small pockets of Bhutanese communities in New York and Montana. Queens, NY is home to America's only dedicated Bhutanese grocery store, but here in Manchester, a Bhutanese-American immigrant has opened the small Himalayas General Store with foods from various Himalayan countries. There's just a few aisles here, and the focus is on packaged foods (probably ones that will keep for longer, as even though there's a small Himalayan community here, it's not enough to support a full-size supermarket). Let's face it, Manchester isn't exactly the metropolis that New York City is, though its population is ...

Update: Patel Brothers - Shrewsbury, MA

Patel Brothers Opened: ca. 2012 Owner: Mafat & Tulsi Patel Previous Tenants: non-grocery tenants Cooperative: none Location: 504 Boston Tpk, Shrewsbury, MA Photographed: May 14, 2026 Happy summer break ! I'm going to try to catch up on news posts I still need to do during this break, so stay tuned. We return to the Shrewsbury Patel Brothers for a quick update! The store has undergone an expansion and a small renovation, bringing it from around 14,000 square feet to a bit over 20,000. One other minor change: they've dropped the "Farmers Market" from the name here, and that appears to be because Patel Brothers uses the Farmers Market brand for smaller locations. And now that this one is larger (though still not very big), it no longer qualifies as a Farmers Market. The layout inside is slightly d...

Special Report: Tashkent Supermarket - Brooklyn, NY (Brighton Beach)

Tashkent Supermarket Opened: 2017 Owner: Odiljon Tursunov Previous Tenants:  Mandee/Walgreens Cooperative: none Location: 713 Brighton Beach Ave, Brooklyn, NY Photographed:  April 5, 2024 and May 29, 2026 Welcome to the flagship Tashneck , er, Tashkent supermarket! This tiny market, opened in 2017 in a former Mandee clothing store on a very  busy corner of Brighton Beach, started what's now a tiny empire of Uzbek food markets . It was just 8,000 square feet, and mostly under the elevated subway tracks. Well, if this store is still open, why am I talking about it in the past tense? The grocer has just completed a major renovation of this location, doubling the size by expanding into a neighboring Walgreens -- and that's the storefront you see above. Now, the space at around 16,000 square feet (more if there's a basement) isn't huge, but it feels comparatively palatial compared to the tiny, overcrowded corner market. And let's be clear about something: this store ...
