SuperFresh

It's been a while, so let's see another supermarket in a former drugstore. (Drugstore closures don't seem to be as frequent lately, meaning that less space is available to open a new supermarket in.) One that's been in progress for a while, since at least last year or so, is this store of around 13,000 square feet. As you might be able to tell from the look of the outside, prior to Rite Aid, this was in fact a supermarket. The only one I could confirm was Fair-Mart, which was here in the 1960s, but it's likely there were other operators over the years.
This store joins two other recent Key Food openings, which you can see all of in the links at the end of this post. And speaking of Key Food, you might notice that the interior looks quite a bit like the Key Food in Woodside, also a former drugstore, but they're not owned by the same group (probably just designed by the same architects). Instead, this store is owned by the Abed family, who also own a Key Food a couple blocks over, also on Kings Highway. In addition, they own three other SuperFresh locations and one other Key Food; as I understand, other family members also own supermarkets outside the city. The Abeds are also working on another, larger SuperFresh over in Bay Ridge.
Produce is the big feature here, taking up a lot of the space of the store on the left side. Bakery/deli and a hot food bar are at the back, with meats in the back-left corner. Frozen, dairy, and beer are on the right side.
Unlike the Key Food about six blocks east of here, this store has a parking lot. It's a small one, but even a small one can be a big asset in many parts of New York City.
In addition to this SuperFresh and the Key Food, Kings Highway has an independent called Treasure Island Food Market directly across the street from this SuperFresh, though it's smaller and focuses on produce, with a small selection of specialty imported foods. There's a handful of other supermarkets in the surrounding areas, many of which are also affiliated with Key Food.
One of the Abeds' other SuperFresh locations, in Dyker Heights about a mile and a half northwest of here, is also in a former drugstore, though that one was a Walgreens.
I'm not sure what Rite Aid's setup would've been like here, but it looks like their registers might have been in the same place where SuperFresh's are now.
