TOUR: Boyer's Food Markets - Shenandoah, PA

Boyer's Food Markets Owner: Dean Walker Opened:  unknown Previous Tenants:  A&P (1960s-1980s) > IGA > Great Valu Markets Location:  600 W Centre St, Shenandoah, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 Any supermarket fan will be able to glance at this store and say exactly what it was originally! This store was built in the 1960s as an 11,000 square foot A&P Centennial, but has since been expanded into its present 20,000 square feet or so. These days, we enter at the far left to go into produce, deli, and bakery in the expansion, with meat on the back wall and frozen/dairy to the far right. You can see a small window in the picture above where you pay for gas at the attached Sunoco station, which is at the back of the customer service counter inside. I don't believe there's anything left from any previous tenant here, and we can tell that this store is older. It was likely remodeled by Boyer's earlier on when they moved in, around 1985, and not significantly

Snapshot: Redner's Warehouse Markets - Shenandoah, PA

Redner's Warehouse Market Opened: 1990s Previous Tenants: none Location: 1 Gold Star Hwy, Shenandoah, PA Photographed: November 29, 2019 Today's store is a very quick look at a Redner's in Shenandoah, a roughly 47,000 square foot warehouse-type store. It's the larger of two supermarkets in Shenandoah, and also has a pharmacy in a separate but connected storefront next door, along with a gas station in front. The store is about a mile out of downtown Shenandoah, where there's another smaller supermarket. We'll be touring that store tomorrow right here on The Market Report!

TOUR: Boyer's Food Markets - Frackville, PA

Boyer's Food Markets Owner: Dean Walker Opened:  ca. 2001 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1970s-1995) > Insalaco's (1995-1998) > TJ Bart's (1998-ca. 2001) Location:  550 W Oak St, Frackville, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 Another day, another Boyer's! This one is quite an interesting one, though. The 21,000 square foot store is built around an original 13,000 square foot pitched-roof ACME. And although you might think that would be easy to tell from the front, the triangle facade we see there is actually not the roofline -- only the left 3/4 or so of the store is actually the original ACME. It appears some of the right-side expansion may be used for backroom space, but when we enter, we can definitely feel the store's heritage. Produce and dairy are in the first aisle, with meat and deli on the back wall. The column we see in the middle of this aisle is actually where the real pitched-roof ends, and everything to the right is an expansion even though it

TOUR: Boyer's Food Markets - Ashland, PA

Boyer's Food Markets Owner: Dean Walker Opened:  1998 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1959-1995) > Insalaco's (1995-1998) Location:  150 E Centre St, Ashland, PA Photographed:  November 29, 2019 Here we are in Ashland, PA, a town of 2400 towards the western side of the Coal Region. We're nearing the end of our circuit around the lower Coal Region area, with just three more towns to stop by after this one. At 18,000 square feet, this is a small supermarket but definitely a complete one -- and complete with some key supermarket history. As some may be able to tell from the exterior (there are a lot of clues remaining), this store was built in 1959 as an ACME. In the 1970s, it was remodeled with a minor upgrade -- adding just part of the Super Saver awning (see the whole thing in Middlesex , for instance). The interior was also remodeled in the 1970s. The store closed in 1995 before becoming an Insalaco's for a few years, then a Boyer's in 1998. I believe at the t
