Liberty Market - Jersey City, NJ (coming soon)

Liberty Market Opening: TBA Owner:  unknown Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  unknown Location:  337 Johnston Ave, Jersey City, NJ Photographed:  February 28, 2026 A small grocer called Liberty Market (no relation to Liberty Market , which has since closed) is under construction near Liberty State Park in Jersey City's Communipaw neighborhood. There aren't any other supermarkets in Communipaw, and it looks like this will be possibly not quite a full supermarket. No opening date anonunced yet. About half a mile east, a new SuperFresh is in progress for the corner of Grand Street and Jersey Avenue, and a completely unconfirmed rumor says a Key Food may move into a closed Rite Aid on West Side Avenue. That's all the Jersey City news I have for now, but here's some news from other parts of the area! Saturday Key Food opens another NYC store New independent grocers prepare to open in  West New York  and  Jersey City  (this post) Two locations...

Special Report: Hashi Market - Jersey City, NJ (Coming Soon)

Hashi Market Opening: TBA Owner:  Sheng Lin Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  none Location:  75 Park Ln S, Jersey City, NJ Photographed:  January 29, 2025 Literally steps from the entrance to the Holland Tunnel, Japanese grocery chain Hashi Market is planning to open a new, small-format Japanese specialty market . Hashi Market is actually owned by a company based in Tokyo, per the Tribeca Citizen -- which, they say, allows them to get more specialized products than a regular US-based importer. The store is small -- I'm not positive, but I'd guess in the 5000 square foot range -- and not much has happened inside the space yet, so it'll likely be a bit of time before it actually opens. But I'll keep an eye on it, and you can be sure I'll be back once it opens! There's more to see this weekend... Saturday ACME Markets - Bronxville, NY ACME Markets - Hoboken, NJ Hashi Market - Jersey City, NJ  (this post) Amazon Fresh - Cedar Knolls, NJ Sunday  (the...

Update: ACME Markets - Droyer's Point, Jersey City, NJ

ACME Markets Opened: 2015 Previous Tenants:  Pathmark (1979-2015) Location:  321 NJ-440, Jersey City, NJ Photographed:  January 12, 2024 One of the last un-renovated stores ACME acquired from A&P in 2015 was this former Pathmark in western Jersey City. It's one of two ACMEs in Jersey City now, with the other one being just under four miles northeast . This store was renovated and had its grand reopening in the fall of 2023, but I just don't like Jersey City that much and don't go there very often so I didn't get to check it out until recently. The biggest improvement? The obvious Pathmark stripe remnant is finally gone from the storefront... Inside, the 60,000 square foot store still has a few Pathmark elements left, but has a full Quality Built decor package. Oddly, ACME seems to be using two decor packages at once, with stores in Haddonfield and Avalon getting the same decor as Walnut Street in Philadelphia , around the same time this store got Quality Built. T...

Update: ACME Markets!

Our first two updates of the day come to us courtesy of the Acme Style blogger! (Plus one store of my own at the end of the post.) Although the blog closed back in 2018, the blogger is still out and about periodically to check out what's going on at the area ACME stores, and we have two updates from them on Bergen County stores. Edgewater (pictured above) We saw Edgewater's remodel back in February  as the reset was still in progress. Let's just say that it hasn't improved since. Acme Style writes: "First aisle was removed to make room for an addition to the Pharmacy in the front corner. It now has a 'consultation room'. I'm sure it's used now for COVID vaccinations more than anything. Interesting that they installed it shortly before the pandemic hit." While this darker flooring is what we've seen in remodeled ACME stores, it is not attractive when it's used to patch a white floor. "Back of the first aisle and gray tile in the fo...
