Speaking of aging stores being refreshed by new operators, let's check out the new Golden Supermarket in Brooklyn's Sheepshead Bay neighborhood! From 1968 to 2025, this roughly 6,000 square foot market was the Silver Star Meat Market, an old-school institution. Well, at some point, the store crossed the line between being old-school and simply old, and the owners began a renovation. I don't know what the full story was, but they never finished it, instead closing the store in late 2025. After finishing up that remodel, new owners have now reopened the market as a halal butcher and small grocery store called Golden Supermarket. Let's take a look!
Golden has set up a grand aisle on the right side, with bakery/deli/prepared foods and butcher counters lining the right side wall and produce opposite. Packaged meats are on the back wall, with dairy/frozen on the left side and a few grocery aisles in the middle. I visited back in April (I know, I've fallen behind on posting these updates) when the store was still in its soft opening, so you'll see some things that weren't fully up and running.
This store does have a dedicated bakery department, somewhat rare in such a small NYC market. The deli (including bodega-style sandwiches and salads and the like) is behind it...
The large Central Asian community in this part of Brooklyn is probably the reason for the switch to halal meat, something Silver Star didn't do at all.
A look across the back wall...
Silver Star was supplied by Krasdale, and Golden is too.
Dairy and frozen are in the last aisle.
And Golden has removed the individual registers that Silver Star had in favor of a single checkout counter...
Now, let's check out Silver Star!

It appears to have been affiliated with NYC Fresh Market (you know, because of the big NYC Fresh Market banner on the front), but I don't know exactly what their relationship was. NYC Fresh was a small chain of grocery stores, mostly in Brooklyn, but is down to just one in downtown Brooklyn. The Harlem location that I posted here closed not too long after I posted that, later reopening under new ownership as a CTown which also has since closed.
Silver Star was set up with packaged meats lining the first aisle and butcher and deli on the back wall. Also on the back wall was a seafood counter that appeared to have been long since closed up:
You can see Golden reused some of the fixtures, such as the red/orange meat refrigerator, but others are new.
It's a little hard to tell, but Silver Star was under construction when I took these pictures. They'd taken out the ceiling, and the things in these pictures that look like spot lights are actually hanging construction lights. You can see some pictures from way back when on Yelp.
Frozen foods were roughly in the middle of the store.
And it looks like this shelving was probably new (or new-ish)...
Dairy and produce were in the last aisle. Again, these fixtures look pretty new, and it also looks like Golden reused them.
Looking towards the back...
And the registers up at the front. You can see here a little more clearly that the lighting situation was temporary, but it seems like Silver Star ran out of steam (probably by running out of money) about halfway through the renovation.
Good to see that it's still a grocery store, though! Here's the rest of this weekend's posts...
