The small town of Hartsdale, New York -- just outside White Plains -- had a variety of chain supermarkets outside of the quaint downtown but none actually in town. Now, that's changed with the addition of Hartsdale Marketplace, an independent that's set up shop in a former Rite Aid of just about 6500 square feet (there may be a basement). The owners of the Key Food in Jersey City have opened up another highly space-efficient, full-service supermarket in a very small space. You'll see just how they fit so much in their small sales floor as we tour. Produce is up front, with deli and bakery in the front-left corner. Beer lines the rest of the left side wall, with meat and a service butcher counter on the back wall, dairy in a grocery aisle, and frozen on the right-side wall with the registers lined up in the front-right corner. The grocery aisles here run side to side.
Take a moment to take in everything in the picture to the right above. Bulk coffee in a row above five shelves' worth of tomatoes and squash, just next to apples and cide above two rows of shopping carts (with the registers and the exit on the other side of that cart return). Quite the efficient use of space.
It doesn't look like they're baking in-store, but they're definitely cooking in-store with a large kitchen department for prepared foods.
The interior feels old-school and familiar, not exactly modern but not in a bad way. This flooring in particular looks so retro that I was wondering if it's perhaps left over from Rite Aid, but it looks like it's not.
Most of the refrigeration seems to be new, though, and there was certainly a lot of work put into making this former drugstore space a full-line supermarket that appears to fill a need in downtown Hartsdale.
And yes, there's even a service butcher counter crammed in here, on the back wall. Frozen foods line the right-side wall of the store...
...and here's the best I could do on the front-end setup, where three registers are all lined up in a row with a few self-checkouts opposite them. In a space this small, you do what you have to do! Here's a look at the rest of this weekend's posts...
