Continuing our 4th of July celebration with another supermarket tour! This time we're in Philadelphia, visiting this store and another not too far away (plus one in Massachusetts). You can probably tell what this store was previously from the outside alone, as it was built as a Walgreens in 2000 and closed in 2023. The roughly 15,000 square foot supermarket opened last month in a neighborhood notably lacking in grocery options especially since the loss of the longtime Holiday Thriftway about two blocks over. The need was clear: When I visited this store, it was already very busy, even at an off time.
Cousin's Grocery Market has built out a surprisingly full supermarket in the small space, with produce and floral in the first aisle on the left side. An in-store bakery (I wasn't expecting that!) is at the end of the first aisle, with meats lining the rest of the back wall. Deli and a large service butcher/seafood department line the last aisle along with frozen, and dairy is up in the front-right corner.
There are multiple Cousin's stores in this area. Cousin's Supermarkets has two locations in Philadelphia, plus one in Camden that they recently sold. Cousins Fresh Market has three locations in Philly plus one in the nearby suburb of Chester. Then there's an independent called Cousin's Family Market about four miles southwest of here. As far as I can tell, none of them are related, except this store might be connected to the Cousin's Supermarkets chain (this is smaller than the other locations, which could be why they used the name Grocery Market instead). The stores have a similar setup, selection, and circulars, and like the Cousin's stores, this one uses Essential Everyday products from UNFI.
The bones of the Walgreens remain -- you can see the mirrored back wall and this angled section at the front, which was likely the photo area -- but all the fixtures are new, and it's easy to forget you're in a former Walgreens inside. Today, this is a full-service supermarket.
It's good to see a full-fledged grocery option return to this neighborhood (albeit long after Holiday Thriftway's closure, and in a smaller building than Holiday), and hopefully something will be done soon with the former Holiday building. It remains boarded up and abandoned but fully intact.
Here's a look at this weekend's other posts!
