This store might be a Gerrity's these days, but we can definitely tell what it used to be from the name of the strip mall!
The rather strangely-shaped 41,000 square foot store is tucked away in the back of the Insalaco shopping center, built in 1985 as an Insalaco's then sold to Gerrity's in 1999. More recently, following the store's joining of the Wakefern cooperative, the brand was switched to The Fresh Grocer, but unlike some stores, this one underwent a remodel to update decor inside and the facade.
As you can see, the store is in the back corner of a strip mall, meaning the layout is a little bit odd. But once we get inside, it's pretty standard. We enter to produce first, with meats on the back wall and dairy/frozen at the far left side of the store. Bakery and deli are in the front left corner, next to the front-end.
We can tell this store has a slightly older decor package from the other Gerrity's we've seen, with this mural in the produce department rather than the typical signage and the single-tier mirrored produce cases. On the other hand, I really like this mural and I think the new remodel removed it.
The decor in the rest of the store has been updated, although it looks like the flooring has not.
The grocery aisles are pretty standard, with newer aisle markers. I would bet the grocery shelving has not been replaced since the store opened, and that likely goes for quite a few of the fixtures around the store. I'm not sure how much was replaced in the remodel. The article also notes that the store was expanded to its current size, but I'm not positive in which direction it's been expanded.
We can tell, though, that this is an older store as the service departments are smaller than we see in larger and newer stores like Luzerne and Hanover.
Opposite the service meat/seafood department is the freezer department.
Looks like it is (or was?) just two rows of cases, one side of aisle 12 and one side of aisle 13. That seems very small, so I wonder if I am forgetting about more freezers somewhere else.
Dairy lines the last aisle and transitions into deli and prepared foods, which are pretty large but still smaller than some of the newer Gerrity's.
Aunt Mary returns, although Mom and Aunt Mary are the only family members represented around the store. Bakery Corner is next, although oddly I don't think there's a service bakery counter here. Clearly, though, there is an in-store bakery.
An overview of the deli-bakery area looking towards the dairy/frozen side, away from the produce side of the store. As we see, some of the perimeter flooring was updated at some point by Gerrity's, but it looks like the center store flooring has not been. I believe the flooring was replaced throughout the store in the latest remodel, although post-remodel pictures are limited out there.
And a look across the front-end back towards the entrance/exit, which you can see to the left below. There's a Dunkin' Donuts and a post office on the other side of the store's front wall to the right.
This is the only supermarket in West Pittston, and while Pittston across the river has a Redner's and an ALDI, an independent supermarket recently closed in downtown Pittston. Head over to The Independent Edition tomorrow to check it out before it closed!
