Snapshot: ALDI - Monticello, NY

ALDI
Opened: before 2009
Previous Tenants: unknown
Location: 121 Broadway, Monticello, NY
Photographed: February 3, 2021
Just outside of downtown Monticello is a roughly 18,000 square foot ALDI, located in what I believe to be half of a former supermarket. I suspect this was the original ShopRite in town, with the current store being built in the early 1980s. From Historic Aerials, though, we can tell this store isn't that old, having been built between 1966 and 1987. That means it isn't all that much older than the ShopRite, so maybe this was some other supermarket -- or maybe the ShopRite was built as a different store. There's something else in Monticello I wanted to take a look at before we leave -- but for once, it's not a grocery store! Check it out in a bonus post tomorrow on Grocery Archaeology.

  1. No clue what it could have been, but there are always possibilities.

Grand Union, of course (as they had quite a few in these areas as you've shown and others not yet shown, including a few that still operate under other brands).

Another (maybe more questionable) would be Weis - I know they had the two stores in Kingston and Newburgh at one time (saw a story about Newburgh closing in 2003) and of course their foray into owning Albany Public, but not sure if they ever had anything else in these areas before buying the chain in Binghamton a few years ago. But this being off of the routing between PA and those NY stores might make it an option.

Not that it looks like either, but who knows what Aldi did (or the plaza ownership) to remodel when they moved in.

    1. Those are definitely really interesting possibilities. For one reason or another, the property setup doesn't feel like Grand Union to me, but that's based on nothing beyond my own gut feeling. I forget about Weis's presence in this area, too, that's an interesting thought! And yes, it's hard to tell what the strip mall originally looked like.
