This store is in Woodland Park, New Jersey, just southwest of Paterson (in fact Woodland Park was previously called West Paterson). The store is between 20,000 and 25,000 square feet, occupying part of a former A&P that moved next door in the early 00s. Western Beef Supermarket Opened: July 2025 Owner:  Castellana family Previous Tenants:  Junior's Food Outlet (closed 2024) Cooperative:  Associated Supermarket Group Location:  135-45 Rockaway Blvd, South Jamaica, Queens, NY Photographed:  September 9, 2025 One look at that trademark orange building and you already know what store we're looking at here: Western Beef, one of New York's quirkiest chains. The chain, which is owned by Italian Americans but specializes in Caribbean foods, originated as a meat wholesaler and later grew to a collection of no-frills low-cost supermarkets across the city and its immediate suburbs. After a leadership struggle between the father and son who owned the chain -- and yes, they're both named Peter Castellana -- Western Beef has recommitted itself to their old identity. Kalam's Bazaar Opened:  August 2025 Owner:  M. Z. Kalam Previous Tenants:  99 Cent Paradise / Aaron's Cooperative:  Associated Supermarket Group Location:  98-01 Liberty Ave, Ozone Park, Queens, NY Photographed:  September 9, 2025 I've now written at length about the recent surge in new store openings under the Associated Supermarket Group, and this weekend, we're seeing two more that they've recently added in southeastern Queens. From 2010 to about 2022, ASG had a small Compare Foods  at the busy corner of Rockaway Bouelvard and Liberty Avenue. In 2022, that store left ASG and joined Key Food, becoming a Food Universe Marketplace. Three years later, ASG has returned to the area with a brand-new store a block east.
