When you see a longtime independent supermarket closing, it's very rare to see a brand-new one open right next door. But that's exactly what's happened here in Woodhaven, Queens, where Scaturro closed after more than six decades in business just as a new independent called Avocado Supermarket opened up literally next door. In fact, in the picture below, you can see the edge of the Scaturro storefront to the far right.
Occupying a former discount store that itself appears to have been an Associated Supermarket way back in 1950, Avocado opened in July. The store is about 7600 square feet -- slightly larger than Scaturro was, but it feels much bigger, in part because there's a lot more open space, but also in part because of the design of the store. There are big windows, high ceilings, and some unusual layout choices.
Inside, it definitely feels shiny and new. The produce department -- several times larger than Scaturro's few shelves of produce -- is in the front-right corner. Beer and dairy line the right side wall in the first aisle, with frozen foods on the back wall. Meat and cold cuts are in the last aisle on the left side wall, with deli in the front-left corner. The registers are in an unusual island setup right in the middle of the front-end.
Needless to say, this is a very different store from Scaturro. The selection is also very different, though, so it's not exactly a 1:1 replacement. The basics are all here, but selection leans towards Latin American foods, very different from Scaturro.
Below, looking up towards the front of the store in the first aisle...
There's no service meat or seafood department here, but there is a case of frozen seafood at the back of the first aisle. The rest of the back wall has frozen foods.
It looks like this building is several smaller storefronts combined, and the right 1/3 of the building is a bit deeper than the left 2/3. That's why you see the wall above when that's only a very small part of the back wall.
The grocery aisles are clean and orderly, which is to be expected in a new store. This store is supplied by General Trading of Carlstadt, NJ, and uses Parade and Life Goods/Life Every Day storebrand items.
Well, the interior is certainly colorful, but I'm not sold on this yellow ceiling. Why didn't they just go for the black ceiling across the store?
Here's a small look inside the discount store that used to occupy the space. As you can see, the bones are the same.
It looks like some of the refrigeration and freezers here were probably secondhand when Avocado opened. That's not uncommon for independent supermarkets that are just starting up, to save money on the opening costs. I haven't been able to locate the name of the owner of this store, so I don't know if they own any other stores. There's no other Avocado Supermarkets in or around New York City.
Here's a look at the registers, which are set up more like a convenience store or bodega than a typical supermarket with several registers all located in one island in the middle of the store. The deli is in the front-left corner of the store.
As you can see, this is much smaller and simpler than Scaturro's deli, but the focus isn't on the deli the way it was there.
And one more look at the registers in the island, with the produce department off to the right in the above picture and the deli behind this island on the left. I'm always glad to see more new independent supermarkets opening, and if you are too, great news -- this weekend we're seeing a couple more brand-new supermarkets! Check them all out here...
