ShopRite
Opened: 2013It's time for another visit to the ShopRite of Belleville, a former Pathmark that closed in 2010 and reopened three years later under the same ownership as the ShopRite of Nutley. Nutley has recently undergone a major renovation, and my most recent post about that also included a look at the beginning of a renovation at the Belleville location. Belleville, although it's now more than 10 years old, still felt like a pretty new store prior to the latest renovation. Now, it feels really brand-new, just like Nutley.
As I guessed, the ceiling has been painted black throughout most of the store, and new flooring has been installed throughout too. It was an extensive renovation for a store that's not even 15 years old, but they didn't relocate any service departments or change the layout in any way.
I love this over-the-top new floral department!
And the grand aisle looks very sharp.
Park Fruit & Vegetable Market branding has gone into the produce department, named after the original store that later became the Nutley Park ShopRite. The decor in this area is similar to Nutley, but with a higher ceiling in this store, it's a little more exciting.
Prepared foods, deli, and seafood line the right-side wall of the store.
Unfortunately, I don't know what Pathmark's layout here was, so I don't know how much was changed before ShopRite opened up.
The decor throughout is big and bold, both figuratively and literally. The signage is large, colorful, and eye-catching.
The same signage is here in the seafood department as what we saw in Nutley, but here it's been scaled up for the larger wall space.
The Belleville ShopRite is about 10,000 square feet larger than Nutley, which is 50,000 square feet.
Umile's Butcher Shop here in Belleville; in Nutley, it was JR's Butcher Shop. It's possible those are references to family members.
Most of the refrigeration throughout the store wasn't replaced, but as you can see it was in excellent shape.
I also love that some of the signage here in the dairy department is actually lit up, which I don't believe Nutley has. The Farm Fresh lettering here in the last aisle -- as tall as a person and illuminated from behind -- is unique and appealing.
The former pharmacy, just behind the Belleville wall above, is now an expansion of the soda and beverages department. A lot of ShopRites have closed their pharmacies, and many new stores aren't even being opened with pharmacies.
The front-end actually runs up the middle of the store here, and the produce department is on the other side of the wall to the left. This is the only part of the store with a white ceiling, and while they maybe will still paint it, I don't mind it -- this area might feel a little too dark and cramped if the ceiling were black.

And that's all for the very nice renovation at Belleville! Nutley Park owns this and the Nutley store along with the Kearny location, which hasn't been renovated in some time (Nutley Park has only owned that store for a few years). It's possible that a renovation is coming to Kearny eventually. I'll keep my eyes out, but in the meantime, check out this weekend's other posts!
