Brookline has a large Jewish and Eastern European population, and the only kosher supermarket in the Boston area. The Bazaar on Beacon Street isn't a kosher supermarket, but it's a location of a local chain of Eastern European supermarkets, with other area locations in Allston, Newton, and Framingham. We'll be seeing the Allston and Newton locations shortly. It opened in 1993 in a space of about 2500 square feet a few blocks west of Coolidge Corner. The centerpiece of the market is a large deli in the middle of the store, with various imported groceries lining the outside. In 2022, the chain stopped stocking items imported from Russia in a show of support for Ukraine.
It doesn't look like there was previously another grocer here prior to Bazaar, but I don't know that for sure. And that's all for Bazaar -- but we'll see more extensive looks at their other locations soon. Tomorrow, it's time to see the final supermarket in Brookline!
