Like the Park Slope one, which opened recently, this new store in Manhattan's Kips Bay neighborhood (on the east side, slightly below Midtown East) is in a basement. The space was previously home to Bed Bath & Beyond, and now LIDL has claimed the approximately 21,000 square foot space as their own. As is true in Park Slope, only a foyer with escalators and an elevator is at street level. The rest of the supermarket is in the basement. And because it's a basement store, the space is, well, weird. Just like every other supermarket in New York City. But one that must be on the books somewhere, although I can't seem to find when City Council passed it, is that every time a drugstore closes in the city, it must be replaced by a supermarket. I've stopped even trying to keep count of how many new supermarkets have opened up in former drugstores, and in fact I'm running out of ways to introduce these posts because they've been so frequent (and yeah, we're really on the bottom of the barrel comedy material here. Foodtown Opened: January 2026 Owner:  Abee and Moe Aduzahreich Previous Tenants:  Dollar Tree Cooperative:  Allegiance Retail Services Location:  1364 Jerome Ave, Bronx, NY Photographed:  February 27, 2026 Supermarkets move into lots of former drugstores , but they also will take basically any available space here in New York City where there isn't, well, any space anywhere. Former dollar stores will do just fine, too. That's the case with the newest Foodtown, located in the western Bronx neighborhood of Mount Eden. It's just 9,000 square feet, but is impressively complete. It's across the street from a slightly larger Antillana Superfood Marketplace, and within a few blocks, there's also a SuperFresh, a Food Universe, and a Bravo.
