Foodtown
Opened: January 2026
It's just 9,000 square feet, but is impressively complete. It's across the street from a slightly larger Antillana Superfood Marketplace, and within a few blocks, there's also a SuperFresh, a Food Universe, and a Bravo.
You enter to a compact produce department in the front-left corner, with the large service butcher counter in the rest of the first aisle. Meats line the back wall, with dairy and frozen on the right side of the store. Deli and a juice bar are in the front-right corner along with prepared foods.
This store certainly feels much larger than it is, and in large part that's thanks to a wide selection and extremely efficient use of space.
I'm not sure whether the people who own this store, Abee and Moe Aduzahreich, also own other supermarkets in New York City. I'm not familiar with that name, but I don't know every supermarket owner in the city, of course.
It's also notable to see an opening for Foodtown and the cooperative that runs Foodtown stores, Allegiance, which seems to be mostly stagnant while their competitors (particularly ASG and Key Food) open stores left and right.
The grocery aisles are straightforward with again an impressively large selection in the small space. Most items here are under the Foodtown brand, but some are Best Yet, plus Green Way and Full Circle for organics.
That is, with the exception of these Best Yet organic teas. I wasn't aware there were any Best Yet organic products, and I thought any organic items distributed by C&S would just be Full Circle. This is the outgoing Best Yet logo (here's the new one), so they're not a new product.
It looks like some of the fixtures, such as possibly these frozen cases, might be secondhand. Everything in this store is still shiny and new looking though, so if they are secondhand, they're nicely refurbished.
Frozen in the second-to-last aisle and dairy in the last aisle. This, too, makes the store feel larger since often in smaller and urban stores, frozen is on one side of the last aisle with dairy on the other.
Juice bar, prepared foods, and deli in the front corner. No bakery here, but that's standard for NYC supermarkets.
I particularly like that the rectangular pattern on the walls matches the flooring.
And a look across the front-end.
Nice to see another new independent NYC supermarket, and a good change too to see a new store opening from Allegiance! (Of course, they've opened stores recently, but not with the speed nor the net gain of Key Food or ASG. Allegiance/Foodtown is and continues to be much smaller today than it has been in the past.) Here's this weekend's other notable news...
Opened: January 2026
Owner: Abee and Moe Aduzahreich
Supermarkets move into lots of former drugstores, but they also will take basically any available space here in New York City where there isn't, well, any space anywhere. Former dollar stores will do just fine, too. That's the case with the newest Foodtown, located in the western Bronx neighborhood of Mount Eden.Previous Tenants: Dollar Tree
Cooperative: Allegiance Retail Services
Location: 1364 Jerome Ave, Bronx, NY
