Associated Supermarkets
Opened: March 2026I'm fairly certain this new Associated, which was previously a Rite Aid, was built as a supermarket. But I can't find what supermarket was here prior to Rite Aid through any of my usual channels. Any insight? Now, the 10,000 square foot space is a (very yellow, outside at least) Associated. This store is in the middle of a mostly-residential neighborhood within Gravesend with not that many grocery store options, especially given that the longtime Key Food a couple blocks away on Avenue Z has recently closed. (It was acquired by another operator, and they're currently doing renovations. According to a Facebook rumor, it'll be a NetCost Market, a local chain of Russian and Eastern European stores.)
Associated is about 5,000 square feet smaller than the Key Food, and there's some things Key Food had that Associated doesn't (such as an expanded selection of European foods, a prepared foods department, and an in-store bakery). Here at Associated, you enter to deli in the front-right corner, with produce and beer in the rest of the first aisle. Meat lines the back wall, with dairy and frozen on the left side of the store.
Although the store is very new-feeling, there's one clear remnant of Rite Aid: the distinct ceiling tiles, which have been painted black.
ASG has been opening a lot of new stores lately. The cooperative now has around 300 stores.
A dedicated spice department is also here in the first aisle.
This store was pretty busy when I visited, so it seems like people in the neighborhood are beginning to shop here. In a good way, it has the feeling of a store that's always been here. It's new and clean and attractive, but feels familiar.
The grocery aisles are tall, for more selection in the smaller space.
And the primary storebrand here is ASG's Avenue A brand, which is supplemented with Best Yet and Full Circle via C&S.
Dairy and frozen in the last aisle.
And the front-end has a nice new ceiling built over it, extending out from the customer service counter in the front-left corner. It's an attractive store and feels like a good resource for an area that recently lost a big supermarket.
That's all for Associated, but see the rest of this weekend's posts here!
