Last spring, we saw the new CTown on Castleton Avenue on Staten Island, owned by Adam Abuzarieh. The store was just 6000 square feet but an attractive, well-appointed neighborhood supermarket. Now, just eight blocks east, another Abuzarieh has opened another attractive, well-appointed neighborhood supermarket. But this one is even smaller: the new Food Dynasty on Castleton is just 5000 square feet. (A side note here: while public records indicate the owner of this store is Numan Abuzarieh, I don't know for certain whether Numan is related to Adam.)
This space has been a grocery store for years (it was once a kitchen showroom) but the past grocers here have been more like bodegas than full supermarkets. It looks like Food Dynasty has expanded into a neighboring storefront or two to get more sales floor space.
The aisles run parallel to Castleton Avenue, so produce is on the front wall in the first aisle. A service butcher counter is in the front-right corner, with meats on the right side wall. Dairy and frozen are on the back wall in the last aisle, with a deli counter in the back-left corner and two registers on the left-side wall.
This isn't a large store -- in fact it's very small -- but it definitely is set up to be more like a full supermarket than a bodega. This is the second Food Dynasty on Staten Island, and the other one is about three miles east.
Top Tomato stores on Staten Island were also owned by different Abuzariehs, although again I don't know for certain whether they're related.
This neighborhood doesn't have a lot of supermarkets (that CTown is the next closest) and this store is directly across the street from a public housing complex.
As you can see here in the grocery aisles, this is no bodega, this is a (tiny) full supermarket.
Frozen and dairy in the last aisle. Some interesting beams here, possibly left over from some past use of the building. As you can see in the first picture of the outside, the far right side of the building has a different roofline (and may have originally been a house or something else like that). By looking at past street views, you can see the previous grocery store here was much smaller.
The deli (still being set up when I visited during the store's first few days) is in the back-left corner, with the registers next to it.
It's nice to see how this store's owners have been able to turn this small, somewhat awkward space into a full-service supermarket, and it represents yet another new store opening from Key Food. Key Food also is working on or has recently opened several other stores in the NY metro area, and I will post them as soon as I get to visit!
That's all for this Food Dynasty, but check out this weekend's other posts here!
