Welcome to the Upper East Side, where a 12,000 square foot former CVS has reopened as the latest Dumbo Market. This store opened only about a month after the new-build Long Island City location, and while it's pretty similar, it's slightly smaller and a little less upscale. That one, for instance, has a dedicated bakery department, a seafood counter, and a small seating area, none of which this store has. Still, it's an attractive, sleek, and stylish new supermarket.
You enter on the left side of the store to the produce department in the first aisle, with service deli and a sushi counter at the back. Frozen foods line the back wall, with meat and dairy in the last aisle on the right side and beer in the front-right corner.
You can see that the produce department has a similar setup here to the LIC location, but the decor is simpler. (It's also possible that's a result of the lower ceiling here.)
This deli setup is also more like a mainstream supermarket than the higher-end LIC deli, but it's still attractive.
Like LIC, there's a Lowboys Cafe coffee shop at the front of the store. It faces the registers between the entrance and exit.
This is a well-designed area -- the coffee shop looks elegant and inviting, and is up front so it's easily visible through the windows.
A look across the front-end next to the coffee shop...
This marks Dumbo Market's fourth location, although the Mujallis, who own Dumbo Market, also own a few Urban Market locations and a SuperFresh in Queens. In a situation typical of New York City supermarkets, their extended family is also in the industry. Their cousins the Hamdans also own supermarkets, but they're mostly under the Met Fresh banner. Their latest store opened recently in lower Manhattan. The Mujallis are also working on an upcoming Dumbo Market in Hoboken along with a SuperFresh in Jersey City.
Inside, you can tell this isn't a new-build store like LIC, but it's modern and looks good.
You can see how high the grocery shelving is here to maximize selection. This store is a block east of a larger Morton Williams and a block west of a smaller Gristedes. There are a number of other grocery stores within a walkable radius, including a Whole Foods and a Trader Joe's.
Meat and dairy are in the last aisle. No service meat or seafood counters here.
The meat department is in the back half of the last aisle, with additional dairy in the front half.
The shiny metal refrigeration is a nice touch here, and of course it helps that everything is shiny and new.
Looking across the front-end, back towards Lowboys and produce on the left side of the store...
I'm interested to see what the upcoming Jersey City and Hoboken stores will be like, and keep an eye out for future coverage of that new Met Fresh! In the meantime...
