Don't remember the tiny City Fresh Market in White Plains? No problem -- that was one of the very first stores I photographed back in 2017 and posted in 2018. Let's return to check it out!
This store opened around 2015, though I haven't been able to nail down an exact opening date. This space has been a supermarket for at least a decade, maybe more, though back in the 70s and 80s it was a furniture store. The store has now been expanded from just 4600 square feet (plus possibly a basement) to 7500 square feet, and a parking lot has been added to a formerly vacant lot next door. The entrance will soon be moved over to the left side, facing the parking lot, although right now it's still under the City Fresh sign above.
The exterior has gotten fixed up and modernized to the typical City Fresh look now.
And the interior is in the process of the same. You can see a look inside the store prior to its renovation in the link above, and the work is ongoing but very extensive. This ramp brings customers up to the store, which is slightly higher than street level (but it looks like the new parking lot entrance might be at grade, eliminating the need for this ramp).
The meat department has been moved off of the back wall to the left-side wall, with a large service butcher counter at the front of the first aisle on the left side and packaged meats behind. Dairy is on the back wall now with what appears to be frozen and maybe more dairy cases going into the last aisle on the right side.
The big change is the expansion, which will include a new grand aisle on the left side with deli, bakery, and juice bar, and maybe produce will be moved here, too. Now it's split between some refrigerated cases behind butcher and some tables up at the front, but that feels temporary.
As you can see from those before pictures above, this work was (and continues to be) quite extensive, with all-new fixtures throughout including grocery shelving, new floor, and new ceiling/lighting.
This interior is standard for the City Fresh and Cherry Valley Marketplace stores, although it's nice to see it's being installed in such a small, cramped store. It's still looking great.
And a look across the back wall.
This store competes with another small supermarket, Food City (previously CTown/Greenside Market/Met Fresh/The Food Emporium) kind of around the corner, and a ShopRite and Whole Foods in downtown White Plains along with a number of grocers in the suburbs, although there's probably not a whole lot of overlap between the customers of this store and the customers of the Trader Joe's in Hartsdale, for instance.
Produce is at the front of the store, but it wouldn't surprise me if eventually this is moved over into the expansion or something. The registers are behind these produce tables. You can see that the walls and ceiling here aren't finished.
But the grocery aisles are looking great!
Refrigerated and frozen cases in the last aisle aren't in use just yet.
This is a beautiful remodel at a very, very small store (kinda like this!), and I'm excited to get back and see how it turns out when everything's done. For now, see the rest of this weekend's posts here!
