Crosby's Marketplace
Opened: ca. early 2000sThe Market Report's second-to-last stop in the Salem area is the Crosby's Marketplace here in South Hamilton! A pleasant, attractive store of just 14,000 square feet, this Crosby's is tucked away in the back of a strip mall behind the Hamilton/Wenham train station. Unfortunately, my knowledge of the history here is very limited and I can't find much information in my usual sources, so any wisdom anyone has to share would be helpful. Crosby's opened at some point between 1980 and 2006 (looks like closer to 2006 than 1980), but the building dates back to at least the 1960s.
You enter the store to the grand aisle on the right side, with produce up in the front and deli-prepared foods behind that, along with seafood and bakery. The meat department is in the back-right corner. Dairy lines the back wall, with frozen and beer/wine in the last aisle on the left side.
It's possible this is the original decor package from the store's opening, but it looked pretty fresh and up-to-date when I visited. Regardless, like the other Crosby's we've seen, this store is maintained extremely well.
Here's a look at some of the prepared foods, branded Henry's, referring to the gourmet grocer in Beverly that Crosby's owns.
I really like the setup of these perishables departments. Although the whole store is small, and these service counters are proportionately small, it doesn't feel cramped or limited.
A look across the back wall, with dairy lining the back of the store...
I assume there was another supermarket here before Crosby's, since the building is set up exactly how I'd expect a ca. 1960s supermarket to be.
Frozen foods continue into an alcove on the front wall, with the registers next to that.

Crosby's is a member of Associated Grocers of New England, and sells Food Club and Full Circle items from Topco.
You can see that the fixtures are on the older side, probably original from the early-00s opening, but that everything is in very good shape.Frozen foods continue into an alcove on the front wall, with the registers next to that.
And with that, we are almost done with the greater Salem area. Come back tomorrow and Sunday for some news posts, and on Monday for the last store in the greater Salem area along with a 10th year special feature and a look at what's next!
