In business since 1941, Henry's Market of Beverly, MA is definitely one of the longest-standing grocers in this area -- though not the oldest operating one. Expanded many times to its present 18,000 square feet, the supemarket was taken over in 2015 by the owners of Crosby's Marketplace. Crosby's has mostly left the store as-is, but has brought some of the higher-end prepared foods and other more gourmet offerings into their other locations.
The building is laid out a bit strangely because of the many expansions, but it's an attractive and well-run supermarket. The first department we encounter is the produce department, in the front section with some very nice skylights bringing natural light into the rustic-style interior...
The salad bar is also here, with the rest of prepared foods over in deli in the main supermarket building. Also in the front section is a liquor store.
Moving over into the main supermarket, you can see that it has a similar general appearance to the Crosby's stores. It looks like Crosby's did a small remodel when they bought the business.
The grocery aisles are in the main supemarket building, and you can see the doorway to the produce/liquor store expansion below.
Dairy is in the first grocery aisle of the main supermarket building. The selection overall angles higher-end but has a full line of the basics. Like the Crosby's stores, Henry's is a member of AGNE (Associated Grocers of New England) and sells Food Club and Full Circle items from Topco.
Meat and the other perishables departments are at the back. This is the same flooring that Crosby's has in some locations, making me think probably they installed it when moving in.
The northern part of Beverly has no shortage of grocery stores. In addition to this one, there's a Whole Foods 3/4 of a mile east that I haven't been to, and a Shaw's and a Stop & Shop a bit north of here. Those will be our next two stops!
Nonfoods on the left side of the store. If I remember correctly, the main supemarket is oriented to face the side wall of the store, meaning the grocery aisles run parallel to the front wall. It seems the expansion where produce and liquor are now was previously a row of smaller storefronts, and the supermarket expanded into them around the early 1980s. The existing supermarket was built around the 1960s.
Frozen foods at the end of the store, on the left side, with deli-bakery and prepared foods in an alcove beyond that. You can see the doorway to that area on the right below.
Perishables service counters line the outside of this alcove with a large cheese island in the middle.
And here's where you can really see where the store shines. Rows and rows of prepared foods, delicious baked goods, and lots of other fresh choices...
I unfortunately wasn't able to try either this gorgeous cinnamon roll or this gorgeous apple fritter. I'll just have to go back at some point.
Packaged grab-and-go prepared foods are at the front of this alcove, and this is the line of items that's also made its way into some Crosby's locations.
The service seafood department is also in this corner.
And over in the main supermarket, the bakery department continues with lots of fresh-baked and local breads.
One more look at the deli-bakery-seafood alcove before we move out...
...and the front-end, which faces the parking lot, is set up similarly to other Crosby's stores. Again, I wouldn't be surprised if they redid this setup (at least cosmetically, maybe) when they bought Henry's.
That's all for this unique store, and tomorrow we're headed to the Shaw's half a mile north!
