Tannersville is a small town, but it does have a large supermarket -- this Weis, which has been expanded to around 63,000 square feet, from an original 45,000 square foot or so store which opened in 1994 as an Insalaco's, later Bi-Lo and then Mr. Z's, which along with all of the other Mr. Z's was ultimately converted to Weis in 2009. More recently, the outside has been remodeled, but used to look much more like the 90s Insalaco's.
The interior was renovated with a simple and early of the Fresh Market decor, likely when the store was switched from Mr. Z's to Weis. We can tell the store is older, partially by the low ceiling and the older fixtures, but it's been fixed up a bit.
Although it is definitely an older Weis, it's in very good shape and looks clean and bright these days.
Produce and the grand aisle are on the right side of the store, with beer and wine in the front, hot foods and deli on the right side, and a natural/gluten free selection at the back. Bakery and seafood are at the back of the grand aisle, with meat on the back wall and frozen/dairy on the left side. Pharmacy and HABA are in the first few aisles. It's a fairly standard Weis layout, although the grand aisle is a bit unusual because of the apparent expansion and general setup of the store.
This is an early version of the fresh market decor, which we saw in Boonsboro (a very long time ago). It would later be modified to this version.
Here's a look at the natural/gluten free section at the back of the grand aisle. As you can see, the store is very compartmentalized and that feeling is intensified by the low ceiling meaning that you can't really see into other parts of the store.
But the decor has held up well, if it really was installed almost 15 years ago.
You can also tell that not a lot of thought went into this renovation, with signs like this. Clearly it was poorly illuminated because, likely in the previous decor package, the sign was not here.
A look at the back wall of the store. Meats are on the back with pharmacy in the island visible to the left.
Clean but unremarkable grocery aisles. Again, we can tell this store is on the older side.
HABA and pharmacy in the first few aisles.
As we can see, this sign is of the newer style. I'm not sure whether the sign was replaced after the store was remodeled, or if this older decor package had just this sign and the decor package was later expanded to include all of the signs in this style.
The flooring is distinctly a bit outdated, but in fantastic condition for its age.
Milk and dairy in the back corner of the store.
I like the hanging frozen foods signage, although the flooring needs to be updated here and throughout the store.
But again, this store still looks good if not amazing these days.
Here's an alcove in the front corner of the store, in what was likely an expansion. The checkouts are on the front wall in what was likely the main supermarket.
Here we can see the front-end, which has been updated a bit since the store opened.
That's all for this Tannersville Weis, although we will of course be seeing lots more Weis stores around the area. Up next we're headed to our final town in the Stroudsburg area, this one about ten miles southwest from here. Check out our first Brodheadsville stop tomorrow on Grocery Archaeology!

  1. The flooring in this store is original to Insalaco's, however, it matches Weis's current decor rather well.
