TOUR: Weis Markets - Franklin/Sussex, NJ

Weis Markets
Opened: ca. 2000
Previous Tenants: none, remodeled 2012
Location: 140 NJ-23, Franklin, Sussex, NJ
Photographed: July 2020
Our next Weis, of the six in New Jersey, is a 54,000 square foot store which was built in the late 90s or early 00s, then extensively redone in 2012. It's probably going to look a bit familiar if you remember Hillsborough...
Bakery, prepared foods, and deli are on the left side of the grand aisle, with produce on the right. Cheese, seafood, and meat round out the perishables on the back wall of the store, and pharmacy is in the first aisle.
I find the grand aisles of Weis stores to be really beautiful. And as much as I do like the newer decor package, I still do love also this one.
Moving into the first aisle, we find HABA with pharmacy in an island at the front.
Moving back to the back wall of the store, we find meat and seafood with packaged meats to the right.
And I must say that for a mainstream chain grocery store, Weis does have a pretty hefty international aisle.
And here's another thing -- Weis has been aggressively lowered their prices especially on key items and storebrand products. Here's a jar of storebrand pasta sauce for $1 (and that's not a sale, that's an everyday price) compared to the Flanders ShopRite's storebrand at $1.49 -- these tags appear around the store. Pretty impressive that Weis can come into ShopRite's home territory, run very good stores, and also beat them on price.
Frozen is here in the second-to-last aisle (I think there's only one frozen aisle...?). And dairy is in the  last aisle...
Bread is up in the front corner of the store along with customer service.
As we see, this store is looking really good! I've been very impressed with the Weis stores I've been in lately.
Why is it so important that Weis beat ShopRite's prices? Well, there's a ShopRite all of 1900 feet away, and you can actually get to one store from the other without going out to route 23. Check out today's tour of the ShopRite here, and tomorrow, we move to the northeast to the small town of Vernon for one store here on The Market Report!

  1. Weis may beat ShopRite on price but they don't seem to draw in as many customers. If Weis was in south Jersey, I'd probably be a regular shopper.

    1. Definitely true, but their entrance to the New Jersey market hasn't been a total failure. They've only closed the one store in Flanders (and then returned to the town later), so while they're not exactly flooding the market with their stores, they're certainly holding their own. And that may be a result of their careful expansion.

  2. This opened no later than 1998 if I'm honest.

  3. Wow, the remodel here is pretty amazing. The whole store was pretty much gutted and redone from floor to ceiling. It IS incredibly similar to Hillsborough.

I've always have been fascinated with Weis opening stores in both Franklin and Newton. Two towns with unwavering loyalty to their respective locally owned ShopRites. The in comes a chain from PA that not many most people are familiar with. Guess this Weis here has carved out a nice amount of business having been so extensively remodeled. Does anyone know when Walmart opened? I believe Weis arrived first. Gotta give them a lot of credit for surviving along side ShopRite and Walmart, both of which are practically within walking distance!

    1. Wal-Mart came in 1999, and I remember it being after Weis.

    2. Isn't it nice? The new-build Weis stores from the 90s on are just so beautiful and many of them have been renovated at least once or twice, so they're always in really good shape. They're a real pleasure to shop in.
