TOUR: ShopRite - Bernardsville, NJ

ShopRite of Bernardsville Owner: Robert Sumas / Village Super Market Opened:  1970s Previous Tenants:  none Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  93 Morristown Rd, Bernardsville, NJ Photographed:  June & November 2020 It's our third stop in Bernardsville! And yes, these are all on the same day, so make sure to check out the former Kings across the street and the former A&P next door. You can put this into the category of smaller, weirdly-shaped 1970s-era Village ShopRites, much like Springfield which is roughly 12 miles due east. Rather normal-looking storefront, although like Springfield, the store itself is pretty much a trapezoid. The left side, which is the grand aisle, is the longer end with the last aisle on the right side the shortest aisle in the store. That seems to be a result of assorted additions made right up to the train line that runs behind this store. I don't know too much of the history of this store, though it seems that the...

107 Morristown Rd, Bernardsville, NJ

Original Tenant:  A&P Address:  107 Morristown Rd, Bernardsville, NJ Opened:  1959 Closed:  1978 Later Tenants:  Jaeger Lumber > Village ShopRite extension Photographed:  June 2020 Today's store is one of three Bernardsville stops. It was built in 1959 as a fairly standard A&P centennial model, but closed in 1978 -- probably from the competition from ShopRite next door and ACME (later Kings ) across the street, and the fact that there was no ability to expand on this property. Occupied by an outpost of local company Jaeger Lumber from 1982 to 1991, it was then taken over by Village Super Market, the owner of the ShopRite, as an extension of the 42,000 square foot grocery store. This store sold nonfood products that didn't fit in the rather small ShopRite, including gardening products and hardware. Check it out before its CVS conversion here . Make sure to tour both those stores above, and tomorrow we're heading out west to ...

TOUR: Kings Food Markets - Bernardsville, NJ

Kings Food Markets Opened: late 1980s Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets (1950s-1980s) Location:  100 Morristown Rd, Bernardsville, NJ Photographed:  June and November 2020, January and July 2021 It's gonna be a big day, folks. This is our first store tour, and it's a long one. I also have a tour of the ShopRite across the street here , and a look at a former A&P just next to the ShopRite here . That's a heck of a lot of coverage for a town of 7600 people. But here we are in Bernardsville, a town in the far northeastern corner of Somerset County. Bernardsville is to the west and northwest of the Great Swamp, and has a small business district here along route 202 (Morristown Road, which unsurprisingly goes into Morristown) and a pleasant little downtown just to the north. The Bernardsville Centre, seen here, was built in the 50s and anchored by an approximately 20,000 square foot ACME, which became Kings in the late 1980s. This store was never renovated into the 2012-era...
