Snapshot: Redner's Warehouse Markets - Ephrata, PA

Redner's Warehouse Markets
Opened: 1987
Previous Tenants: GIANT Food Stores (planned, never opened)
Location: 423 N Reading Rd, Ephrata, PA
Photographed: August 20, 2019
Our last mainstream supermarket here in Ephrata is the Redner's Warehouse Market, a PA chain of lower-end mainstream grocery stores. The stores tend to be large and value-based but not discount supermarkets. This store is slightly smaller than the neighboring Weis, at about 48,000 square feet.
JoshAustin610 explains that this store was planned in 1986 as a GIANT Food Store, but they ultimately backed out before opening and Redner's moved in instead. We do have one more Ephrata store before we move on, and it'll be another salvage store on the eastern side of town on The Independent Edition tomorrow!

  1. You might be interested in visiting the Redners in Bel Air, MD at 2126 N Fountain Green Road. The building itself was constructed in 1998/1999 as a Martins (Giant-PA) location. The store never opened as Martins because Ahold purchased Giant-MD in 1998. As part of the FTC consent decree Ahold could not open any stores in overlapping Giant-MD/Giant-PA areas for ten years. Redners opened in 2008. Ahold had another Martins location in Bel Air on MD 24 just before Business Route 1 that they sold to Weis as they stuck with Giant-MD in Bel Air. I'm guessing that Ahold kept the now Redners location for the full ten years of the consent decree in case they wanted to open a Giant-MD location there but ended up selling to Redners. I have not been in the Bel Air Redners so I don't know how much of the 1990s Giant-PA layout is till in tact. That would be produce on the right, service departments in the back and refrigerated/frozen on the left. Based on the Google Maps pictures it looks like Redners has given the place a good remodel. But the exterior is still classic 1990s mirror front Giant-PA. The Weis in Bel Air is worth an exterior look too as it still sports the 1990s mirror front facade as well. For a long time after Weis bought the store they left the 1990s Giant-PA interior. However sometime in the past 10-15 years Weis did a gut job remodel on the inside to bring it up to their more modern store standards.

  2. Redners is awful. Not at all a discount grocery. I was really disappointed when I stopped in here. Sharp shopper is hit or miss but their drink prices can't be beat!

  3. Giant actually *did* open here but the location didn't last long. I have the article around *somewhere*
