Here in Harlem, a longtime supermarket is getting a pretty big remodel. The original supermarket was around 7700 square feet (possibly with a basement in addition), and as it's expanding into a neighboring McDonald's, it's jumping up to around 13,000 square feet. This location goes back as a Daitch Shopwell and then just Shopwell (predecessor to The Food Emporium) to at least the 1970s, and by 2005, it was an Associated. In 2019, the store rebranded to Food Dynasty, a Key Food brand.
Here, we're going to see a combination of my 2021 photos of the store prior to the remodel, and a fresh set from Thursday as the renovation progresses. As we'll see, a lot of work is done but the whole store isn't quite finished yet.
The entrance and exit are still in the same place, but instead of going straight to enter the produce department, you make a right turn now to a much larger produce, deli, and bakery department in the former McDonald's space. Cold cuts are at the back. Beer has moved into part of the former produce department, with meats on the back wall and dairy/frozen in the last aisle on the left side.
This area is nearly complete, although there's still some work going on. There'll probably be some decor going up eventually, too, though with these smaller urban stores you never know. Regardless, this is a really nice and spacious change from the previous setup, which you'll see in a moment.
Previously, the produce and deli departments were jammed into the front-right corner of the store.
Now, you can see that that spot has been turned into beer and condiments, with a grocery aisle added into part of the former produce department. From here on out, the store remains just as cramped as it used to be, but the new expansion is very nice.
The deli was up on the front wall between the entrance and exit, and that area has now been temporarily covered over. I don't know what the plan is for that, since the deli is now in the expansion.
The grocery aisles were and still are very tight, but that's about par for the course in New York City. New shelving has been installed and is still in the process of being stocked throughout the store.
The meat department has stayed on the back wall, though some items like packaged seafood and cold cuts are now over in the expansion, meaning the meat department itself is larger.
Very clearly, the grocery aisles are still a work in progress.
The dairy and frozen cases in the last aisle looked fairly new back in 2021, so it doesn't look like they've been replaced.
We'll have to see how much work is done to this side of the store in the remainder of the remodel. New flooring? Painting the ceiling black to match the other half?
Beer used to be in the front corner here, and has been moved into the first aisle. This area is now an expansion of the dairy department and packaged baked goods.
No dramatic changes on the (very cramped) front end, but again, we'll see what else continues to happen here. You can see new aisle markers, though.
Nice to see a big redo happening at this small supermarket, and I'm interested to see how the rest of it turns out! Here's a look at this weekend's other posts...
