LIDL entered the United States in 2017 and has been moving into quite a few vacant supermarket spaces. It's a little bit like ALDI, except completely unappealing and much worse. Ahem, journalistic integrity tells me I should actually describe the chain so I'm going to go with "larger format stores than ALDI, a weaker private label program, in-store bakeries, and a larger selection of nonfoods." Anyway, I didn't even realize this store had been taken over by LIDL when I visited; it was a centennial model A&P that had been extensively remodeled and expanded over the years by A&P, then taken over by ACME in 2015 and closed three years later. ShopRite of Hillsdale Owner: Inserra Supermarkets Opened: 1979 Previous Tenants:  Valley Fair department store Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  372 Broadway, Hillsdale, NJ Photographed:  December 2020 We previously saw the Kings here in Hillsdale . That store started out in the 1960s as a Stop & Shop, with this store probably opening the following decade. The best part is... the classic sign remains! Despite this, the interior of the store has been totally remodeled recently. The store is set up with one row of parking between the front wall and the street, then larger parking lots at either end. I assume this is intentional, but the entrance on the right here brings you in to floral and the entrance at the far end, which has a sign that says Pharmacy, brings you in to pharmacy. Let's start on this end... Floral is in the front corner here, with produce taking up the rest of the first aisle. Seafood and meat line the back wall, with deli in the back...

Kings Food Markets Opened: 1982 Previous Tenants:  Stop & Shop Location:  381 Washington Ave, Hillsdale, NJ Photographed:  December 2020 It's time for our next Kings tour here in Bergen County! Unlike our last Kings in Ridgewood , this store was purchased in late 2020 by ACME and is expected to continue operating as a Kings going forward. (And by the way, that sale is closing today -- or at least it's expected to.) This is the first of a few Kings locations we're going to see that was built as a Stop & Shop during their first (1960s) entry into New Jersey, then sold to Kings in 1982. The 30,000 square foot store once shared the mall with a Medimart pharmacy owned by Stop & Shop, now a Walgreens. Deli is on the front wall, with bakery up next on the right side of the store. The Fresh Grocer of Pascack Rd Owner: David Maniaci / Nicholas Markets Opened:  2020 Previous Tenants:  ACME Markets > ShopRite > Vitale Foodtown > A&P Cooperative:  Wakefern Food Corp. Location:  315 Pascack Rd, Washington, NJ Photographed:  December 2020 Let's review some history. Nicholas Markets owns this store, which was switched to Wakefern's The Fresh Grocer banner in early 2020. Previously, it had been a Nicholas Foodtown, which was remodeled extensively in 2017-18. We saw the store in 2016 here . Before that, it was an A&P from 1998 to 2015, which replaced a Vitale Foodtown which in turn replaced a ShopRite which in turn replaced a 1950s-era ACME. There was previously another A&P at the other end of this mall, which coexisted with the ACME in this location. That A&P was open from around 1960 to 1980.
